Select Sires Summer Internships


Select Sires Inc., Plain City, Ohio, is continually seeking college students for internships at its headquarters facility over the summer, beginning in May or early June. Complete position descriptions for the available internships are below.

Students majoring in dairy science, animal science or communications who are familiar with the dairy industry are preferred. Strong writing and computer skills are essential. While juniors or seniors will be given preference, sophomores will be considered. Applicants must submit cover letters and resumes with references no later than January 1, of the internship year.

Corporate Communications Summer Internship

Background and skills needed

  • Major in communications, or in dairy and animal science with a communications focus, or in a related area of study
  • Must have strong writing skills and be detail oriented
  • Must have completed basic journalism and/or public relations coursework; additional coursework in desktop publishing is preferred
  • Familiarity with dairy cattle pedigrees

Internship resonsibilities

  • Main responsibilities include production of yearly calendar and writing press releases and customer testimonials
  • Help coordinate logistics for some trade show booth materials
  • Assist with desktop publishing projects, such as preparing advertisements, brochures and flyers
  • Perform clerical duties, such as photocopying, collating mailings and filing
  • Assist other departments under direction of supervisor

  • Availability: Full-time
  • Compensation: Students are paid on an hourly basis
  • Transportation: Student must provide his/her own transportation

Dairy-Sire Marketing Summer Internship

Background and skills needed

  • Major in dairy or animal science, or in a related area of study
  • Understanding of the dairy industry
  • Experience with fitting cattle
  • Familiarity with dairy cattle pedigrees
  • 4-H, FFA and/or collegiate dairy judging experience preferred

Internship resonsibilities

  • Main responsibilities will be assisting the marketing department with preparing cattle for photography, including selecting, clipping, grooming and fitting cattle
  • Assist marketing department to coordinate and execute in-house projects as designated by supervisor
  • Perform clerical duties, such as photocopying, collating mailings and filing
  • Assist other departments under direction of supervisor

  • Location: Plain City, Ohio
  • Availability: Full-time
  • Compensation: Students are paid on an hourly basis
  • Transportation: Student must provide his/her own transportation, when traveling for work, transportation will be provided
  • Travel: The duties of this position include extensive travel throughout the United States

Information Systems Internship

The Select Sires Inc. Information Services department is seeking one college student for a technical internship or cooperative work opportunity at its headquarters facility for 2017. Options for area of focus include:

User Experience Research and Design

  • Candidates must possess knowledge of user interview and needs assessment, those with design backgrounds are preferred
  • Primary responsibility will be to conduct user research and assist in the design of internal applications

Mobile Application Development

  • Candidates must possess knowledge of HTML, CSS and JavaScript
  • Primary responsibility will be to prototype mobile application opportunities

Web Application Development

  • Candidates must possess knowledge of C# and/or HTML, CSS and JavaScript
  • Primary responsibility will be to assist other developers in building modern web applications for internal use

Data Extract-Transform-Load (ETL) Development

  • Candidates must possess knowledge of T-SQL and relational database technology
  • Primary responsibility will be to assist other developers in migrating data between disparate systems

Candidates with experience or familiarity of dairy or beef agriculture are preferred. In each area the successful candidate will be able to learn from seasoned professionals and will be included on active projects as a contributor.
