MEMORANDUM

SUBJECT: New CVM Test Results for 7HO5442 Muranda Mandel MOE-ET

DATE: Dec. 13, 2001

New diagnostic test results indicate that 7HO5442 Muranda Mandel MOE-ET is not a carrier of the genetic recessive, Complex Vertebral Malformation (CVM).

In September, Select Sires received gene-based test results for MOE that identified him as a carrier of CVM. In reviewing his pedigree (Lutz-Meadows E MANDEL-ET x TESK-Holm Valiant Rockie x 9HO719 Whittier-Farms NED BOY x 7HO900 Straight-Pine Elevation PETE), it seemed surprising that MOE would be a carrier based on what was known about CVM at the time. However, as standard policy, Select Sires posted MOE's CVM test results on its Web site immediately.

Since MOE had been used extensively as a sire of embryos and future sons, Select Sires submitted additional semen and hair samples for further diagnostic evaluation. Earlier this month, Select Sires received official notification that MOE is not a CVM carrier.

Select Sires has worked closely with the laboratory to try to understand the varied test results. After an in-depth investigation, the laboratory has identified that the original sample somehow had been contaminated. A review of the second set of samples confirms that MOE is not a CVM carrier.

Select Sires continues to have confidence in the accuracy of the gene-based diagnostic test for CVM.
