Comprehensive IGENITY® Profile Receives Upgrade

The comprehensive IGENITY profile - available to the dairy industry from Merial and Select Sires - continues to turn science into on-farm success with the addition of new DNA markers for production, Productive Life (PL), fertility and now Somatic Cell Score (SCS). This exciting development expands the reach of these DNA tests and uncovers new genetic information about health and fitness traits.

Over the next couple of months, the IGENITY profile will be upgraded to include additional markers and account for more of the genetic differences in animals. Results from the new profile are available now for bulls in Select Sire lineup.

Selecting for improved health and fitness has been a goal of producers for a long time. These traits are often difficult to measure and traditional genetic evaluations usually have low accuracy. IGENITY profiles however, provide genetic information about these traits as soon as the animals are born. Using IGENITY profiles for PL, dairy form, Daughter Pregnancy Rate (DPR) and SCS to supplement PTA or PA values on cows and heifers will help producers make more accurate breeding and selection decisions.

Select Sires is using these profiles to choose between full brothers when selecting bulls for entry into the PGA™ sampling program. Producers can use these profiles in exactly the same way when selecting heifer calves. In addition to the performance markers, the profiles also provide genotypes for coat color, CVM, BLAD, DUMPS, kappa casein, beta casein and beta lactoglobulin. A diagnostic test for persistent infection of the BVD virus is now available as an added option to the IGENITY profile. This allows producers to routinely screen calves for this costly disease. Now, from a single tissue sample, producers can learn more about the genetic potential of their calves as well as determine if they are persistently infected (PI) with BVD.
