Frequently Asked Questions about Select Sires Summer Internships
1. What are the basic responsibilities and requirements of Select Sires interns?
Select Sires is committed to providing students with internships that will not only give them a summer job, but will also help them develop a portfolio and resume as they enter the working world. Successful candidates will be those who are majoring in animal science, dairy science, agricultural economics, agricultural communications or a related field. Though specific requirements are listed below, computer skills (word processing, spreadsheets) are essential for all Select internships. Additional responsibilities may be assigned as the supervisor feels appropriate.
2. What specific internships are available?
Corporate Communications:
The corporate communications intern primarily is responsible for assembling Select’s yearly breeding calendar. This includes, but is not limited to, layout of the calendar, researching pictures and facts about the Select organization, as well as holiday dates and breeding schedules, and assisting with project publishing. The corporate communications intern is also responsible for news-release writing and assisting with promotional material publications. There is no travel involved in this internship.
In addition to knowledge of the dairy industry, successful candidates will have experience in desktop publishing software such as Quark Express, InDesign, and Photoshop. Writing and computer skills are essential.
Dairy-sire Marketing:
The dairy-sire marketing intern is responsible for assisting the dairy-sire marketing department with preparing cattle for photography. This includes, but is not limited to, clipping, grooming and fitting cattle for photography, helping select appropriate animals for photography, and assisting the photographer to create the best possible photo of the animal. Dairy-sire marketing interns also are responsible for helping the dairy-sire marketing department coordinate and execute in-house projects as designated by the supervisor. This position requires extensive travel.
An understanding of the dairy industry and fitting experience is required. 4-H, FFA and/or collegiate livestock judging experience is also preferred.
Beef-sire Marketing:
The beef-sire marketing intern is responsible for assisting the beef-sire marketing department with promotional projects including, but not limited to, sire and progeny photography and videorgraphy, preparation of promotional materials and assisting with other beef-marketing projects. Some travel may be involved.
An understanding of the beef industry as well as experience with beef cattle is required. 4-H, FFA and/or collegiate livestock judging experience is also preferred.
3. How long do the internships last?
Select Sires summer internships are approximately 12 weeks long, with start and end dates flexible with the student’s school schedule.
4. Can I apply for more than one internship?
Yes, but please indicate in your cover letter the internships for which you are applying.
5. How many hours a week will I work?
Summer interns are considered temporary full-time employees, which typically means 40 hours per week. On limited occasions where extra hours may be required, the supervisor will work out details with the intern.
6. What if I need time off?
Select understands that college is a busy time, and therefore generally will allow one week (without pay). As with any job, prior approval from the supervisor is required.
7. How are summer interns paid?
Summer interns are paid via direct deposit on a biweekly basis. Select offers competitive compensation to interns, with details discussed when an internship offer is extended.
8. Is housing provided?
It is the student’s responsibility to locate and secure appropriate housing. However, we do what we can to help locate safe, affordable housing. Select Sires has a very good working relationship with The Ohio State University, and can leverage contacts to help find good temporary homes for our interns, either on campus or with agriculture students looking for temporary summer roommates.
