Mel DeJarnette Promoted to
Director of Technical Research at Select Sires
PLAIN CITY, Ohio, February 28, 2011 - Mel DeJarnette, former senior reproductive specialist, has been promoted to the newly-created position of director of technical research for Select Sires Inc. In this position, DeJarnette will be responsible for conducting research designed to increase efficiency of semen production, harvest, processing and cryopreservation with an ultimate goal of improved post-thaw sperm survival and fertility potential. Additionally, DeJarnette will manage Select Sires' competitive grants research program that supports university research targeting improved efficiency of dairy and beef cattle production and reproduction. Over the past three decades, this program has distributed over two million dollars to over 400 proposals from academic institutions across the U.S., reflecting Select Sires role as a leader in research and development for the A.I. industry.
During his 20 years of tenure at Select Sires, DeJarnette has developed novel semen extenders, cryopreservation procedures, and has implemented numerous state of the art technologies into Select Sires' semen evaluation and quality control programs. DeJarnette was closely involved in research that led to the validation and commercial implementation of sex-sorted semen. As senior reproductive specialist, DeJarnette was key in the development of Select Reproductive Solutions™ (SRS™) and the Program for Fertility Advancement™ (PFA™). Both programs were the first organized programs of their kind. SRS was designed to increase efficiency of A.I. through improved environment and management of the cow herd and PFA was planned to improve fertility potential of the frozen-thawed semen product. DeJarnette has authored or co-authored 34 peer-reviewed publications, 40 abstracts and has presented numerous papers at both scientific and producer-oriented symposia on the regional, national and international level.
