The Complete Cow Engineered by Select Sires
"Today's dairy producers are striving to breed the
complete cow, one who can produce and reproduce,"
explains Ron Long, Vice President of Sire Procurement.
"The complete cow has the capacity and strength to
compete at the feed bunk. She has all-terrain feet
and legs to stand up under stress plus a trouble-free
udder for fast milk out. The complete cow has the
inherent ability to make dairy producers money."
"Select's balanced lineup can be used with the utmost
confidence to breed the complete cow," states Long.
"We offer reliable, breed leading genetics that can
meet the criteria of any breeding program. No other
A.I. organization can offer Holstein breeders five
bulls over +3.00 for type. Nor does any other stud
offer more bulls over +3,000 for milk. Plus, our nine
new Holsteins offer more variety to our already diversified lineup."
The Breed Leaders
As Long stated, Select Sires is home to five bulls
over +3.00 for type, a feat no other stud can match.
7HO5157 Durham leads this all-star cast at +3.47.
He is followed by newcomer 7HO8419 Approval at +3.37.
Rounding out this fab five are 7HO5767 Bonanza (+3.08),
7HO6250 Emerson (+3.05) and 7HO4246 Starboy (+3.00).
It's interesting that only five bulls on Holstein's
Top 100 TPI list are over +3.00 for type and four
are at Select...Durham, Approval, Bonanza and Emerson.
7HO4637 Winchester and 7HO5253 Caleb are a dynamic
duo for production and TPI. Both are over +3,000
for milk and rank among the breed's top five for this
trait. Winchester and Caleb will also rank among
Holstein's Top 25 for TPI at +1624 and +1546, respectively.
Making A Select Debut
Select Sires released nine new Holstein sires into
the proven ranks after the November 1999 sire summary.
Three of these new releases will debut on Holstein's
Top 100 TPI list, 7HO6245 Latin (+1585), Approval (+1467)
and 7HO5206 Clark (+1465).
Latin is the breed's highest new bull on the prestigious
Top 100 TPI list. His impressive numbers of +2,671M and
+85P coupled with his +1.44 udder composite and his +1.40
feet and leg composite score push him to the top. A Luke
out of an Elton, Latin will help to straighten rear legs
and does an excellent job on foot angle. He also sires
outstanding udder support and correct teat placement.
Approval goes right to the top of the breed's type charts
at +3.37. This Excellent (90) Jed son is the kind of
bull that can sire tremendous frames, correct feet and
legs, and fancy udders. "Approval's an excellent cross
for high producing cows that need more strength, power
and substance," says Long. "Approval's also a smart
choice to sire that show winning heifer or high scoring cow."
Clark is also an elite type improver at +2.53. He sires
extremely tall, dairy, open ribbed cows with good depth
of body. "The Clark daughters walk and track very straight
and have strongly attached udders. They do all of this and
maintain good production levels giving Clark his +1,816M,"
comments Long.
A new outcross sire joins Select's proven ranks, 7HO5581 Jetset.
This Luke son from an Excellent (91) Eagle out of an Excellent (90)
Bookie daughter can be used in many different breeding programs.
Jetset is nearly a ton for milk, +.05%P and +72P. His daughters
are tall, open ribbed, strong and deep bodied with exceptional
udder attachments.
"Yet another balanced bull that can sire the complete cow is
7HO5384 Publitzer," states Long. "He is an outstanding bull
not only for overall type at +1.52 but also on both udder
composite at +1.74 and feet and legs at +1.97. Publitzer
offers a high production pedigree and is plus for protein
and fat percent."
7HO5386 Chil is a combination of two of the most popular
sires ever at Select Sires, Mathie and Mark. Sired by
Mathie, Chil is out of an Excellent (91) Mark daughter
with records over 30,000M and 1,000F. He is over +2,200M
and +69F while being an outstanding overall type improver.
Chil is +1.93T and over +2.00 for udders and feet & legs.
"The Chil daughters are very similar to the Mathies in that
they are tall, upstanding individuals with good depth of
rib and width throughout," says Long. "They walk on correct
feet and legs and have outstanding udders. Dairy producers
who had success with Mathie will find Chil to be a great
addition to their breeding programs."
For those producers looking to improve production, 7HO6246 Kit
fits the bill. He is +2,376M and +77P while being plus on all
composites. "The Kit daughters are medium sized cows with
good feet and legs," comments Long. "They have very correct
teat placements and high, wide rear udders."
Yet another balanced genetic package to sire the complete cow
is 7HO8420 Mr Marbuck. He is a Starbuck son out of the
Excellent (95) Mark Maui who is backed by two more generations
of Excellent, high producing cows. Mr Marbuck is nearly a ton
of milk, +61P, +2.12T and over +1.00 for all composite scores.
"Mr Marbuck will appeal to both the high type, pedigree conscious
breeders and those seeking solid production and type in one package,"
states Long. "Great frames, outstanding feet and legs and well
attached udders will be his trademark."
7HO5244 Blaze*RC will set the Red & White world on fire. He is
unmatched among red sires for milk (+1,214), components (+.06%P, +.09%F)
and udder composite (+2.36). At +1364TPI, Blaze may be the Red & White
breed leader for the complete package. This Program for Genetic
Advancement (PGA) graduate has a superior sampling with 197 daughters
in 144 herds giving him a 92% Rel.
High Protein Breeds
"Select Sires sets the standard in Jersey genetics," explains
Jeff Ziegler, Dairy Sire Analyst. "We have six of the top nine
PTI sires in the breed with 7JE386 Declo (+341), newcomer 7JE424
Freedom (+330), 7JE404 Bert (+320), 164JE1 Lemvig (+312), 7JE399
American (+310) and 7JE385 Glass (+307). Furthermore, Declo and
Glass are first and third for protein at +78 and +70, respectively.
Lemvig is also the breed's best fat sire at +92."
"7JE290 Barber was the eye catching sire of the 1999 All-American
Jersey Show," adds Ziegler. "He sired the first place aged cow
and three of the top 10 cows in the Jersey Jug."
New release Freedom ranks fourth in the breed for PTI and third
for fat at +80. He is nearly a ton of milk and the best of the
Flower cow family for combined fat and protein at +138. "Freedom
is a great cross to Select, Barber, Montana and Alf daughters,"
says Ziegler. "And he will be used as a sire father here at Select."
7JE400 Joe is another new addition to Select's Jersey lineup.
He ranks in the breed's top 10 for protein at +67 and is among
the breed's top 20 for PTI at +286. "Joe is from a different cow
family, the Song family from the Kenny Dairy Farm in Pennsylvania,"
states Ziegler. "Plus, he has a different sire stack, Berretta x
Hermitage x Reliant x Brass. Joe is an excellent cross to Barber,
Pitino, Alf and Daniel daughters."
Brown Swiss breeders continue to rely on 7BS693 Prophet to sire
the complete cow. Prophet is the number one net merit sire in
the breed at +$226. His son, 7BS722 Sam, the only Prophet son
in A.I., ranks sixth in the breed for this trait at +$177. They
are joined by new release 7BS712 Contract, a balanced production
sire at +1,548M, +39F and +44P. "Contract is a rare find in A.I.,
being a Pretus son from Christine," says Ziegler. "He sires
outstanding udder traits and near perfect teat placement and
length. Contract's a correct mating for Blend, Emory, Jetway
and Pete Rose daughters."
7GU342 Raptor hits the Select Guernsey lineup at the top,
ranking as the breed's number two PTI sire at +364. "The bull
offers a different pedigree being sired by the highly proven
production bull, Jimco Pansys Patrick," explains Blaine Crosser,
Guernsey Sire Analyst. "His dam is an Excellent (91) Pender
daughter that produced over 25,000M her first two lactations and
earned first place tanbark awards at the Ohio State Fair and at
National Junior Guernsey shows. Raptor will improve thurl width
and sire very nice rear udder attachments with good width. He
should cross well on Loral, Ambionic, Rons Pride and Sharp daughters."
Select Sires has A.I.'s most credible lineup of highly superior
sires that can engineer the complete cow. These sires help the
federation of 10 farmer-owned and controlled cooperatives achieve
its basic objective: to provide America's best genetics at reasonable prices.
