Select Sires Dominates
Net Merit Lists Again


The Active A.I. rankings are out following the November Sire Summary and Select Sires has maintained its stronghold as America’s best. They nearly managed a clean sweep with the #1 Net Merit Dollars in four of the five major dairy breeds. And in that fifth, they pulled in just behind the leader with #2 and #3.

Net Merit is an economic index that takes into account the individual’s PTAs for milk, fat, protein, somatic cell score and productive life while subtracting for feed costs and the mastitis and milk quality costs associated with somatic cell scores. More and more producers are paying attention to this important index in selecting elite sires for their breeding programs as it combines the money making traits with the profit draining expenses that come with milking cows.

Select’s chart toppers in November include the +3000 plus milk Holstein sire, 7HO4637 Winchester; the balanced PTI Jersey, 7JE386 Declo followed by 7JE385 Glass; 7BS693 Prophet, an elite production Brown Swiss bull; and the much talked about Ayrshire 7AY60 Recruiter. Narrowly missing top Guernsey honors are 7GU342 Raptor and 7GU339 Luxury.
