Select Sires Names Facility After Industry Leader

The Ebersole CenterPLAIN CITY, Ohio, Nov. 8, 2000 -Select Sires has named its sire-in-waiting facility in Tunkhannock, Pa., after Lloyd Ebersole in recognition of his 38 years of highly regarded involvement in the A.I. industry. Previously called the Valley View Farm, this 500-bull facility has been renamed The Ebersole Center.

Ebersole, who will retire in January 2001, is merger operations manager for Select Sires and Sire Power in Tunkhannock.

"Renaming this center is fitting because of Lloyd's lifetime of dedication to the dairy and beef industries, and his company," says Dave Thorbahn, general manager, Select Sires, Plain City, Ohio. "Now that Select has increased the number of dairy bulls it samples each year through the Program for Genetic Advancement (PGA) to 350 - the highest in the industry, The Ebersole Center will have an even more influential role in industry progress."

Previously president of both the National Association of Animal Breeders and National Dairy Shrine, Ebersole began his A.I. career in 1962 by working in the barn and laboratory of First Penn ABC. He then became an A.I. technician for three years. After that, he attended Pennsylvania State University, State College, Pa., earning a bachelor's degree in agriculture education and placing first in the 1968 National Intercollegiate Dairy Cattle Judging Contest.

Upon graduation, Ebersole began working in herd evaluation and technician training for the Northeastern Breeders Association. In 1972, he joined Sire Power as a sire analyst, later being named the cooperative's director of sire programs in 1974 and assistant manager in 1979. As assistant manager, Ebersole increased the number of Holstein bulls being sampled from 18 to 120 per year.

"Lloyd managed the design and building of this labor-efficient, durable young-sire facility, construction of which began in 1983," says DuWayne Kutz, operations and facility manager, Select Sires, Tunkhannock. "At the same time he supervised the total sire program, setting standards for sire procurement that filled what is now The Ebersole Center with some of the industry's best-pedigreed bulls. Lloyd's lifetime of devotion not only to his company, but also the dairy and beef industries, makes this honor well-deserved."

Select Sires is a federation of 10 farmer-owned and controlled cooperatives, serving the largest number of cooperative members in the United States. It provides excellence in sires, service and programs to achieve its basic objective of supplying livestock breeders with America's best genetics at a reasonable price.
