Beal Named Evaluator of the Year at National Conference


Ron Beal (With Plaque) PLAIN CITY, Ohio, May 22, 2001 — Cache Valley/Select Sires (CV/SS) evaluator Ron Beal, Logan, Utah, has been honored as the Select Mating ServiceTM (SMSTM) evaluator of the year. A 20-year veteran, Beal received this award at the Select Sires national SMS evaluators conference held in Idaho in May.

"It is especially fitting that Select Sires recognize Ron Beal for his achievements during our national meeting in Idaho, one of the fastest-growing dairy areas in the country," says Lon Peters, dairy sire analyst and manager of the Select Mating Service. "That's because Ron is one of the key reasons why the SMS program also has grown tremendously in the CV/SS area. Just as important, Ron has been a huge help in the testing and development of changes to SMS that ultimately have benefited dairy producers throughout the world."

A long-time employee who has provided loyal service to CV/SS customers, Beal was cited for his extraordinary work ethic and willingness to adapt to change, as well as his dedication to helping dairy producers improve their herds.

The SMS Evaluator of the Year award was presented during a barbecue at Si-Ellen Farms, Jerome, Idaho. More than 50 SMS evaluators from the United States, Canada and Mexico participated in conference training sessions at 16 additional dairies in southern Idaho, including Murgoitio Dairy, Boise; Roorda Dairy, Caldwell; Gerald Withers Dairy, New Plymouth; Pline Farms, Nampa; Stewart Farms Inc., Nampa; Sevy Dairy, Melba; Stouder Holsteins, Wendell; Rocha Dairy, Wendell; T & S Dairy, Gooding; DeGroot Dairy, Jerome; Ciocca Dairy, Wendell; Box Canyon Dairy, Wendell; Tolman Dairy, Jerome; Frontier Dairy, Buhl; and Desert Rose Farms, Filer.

Since 1973, Select Mating Service has provided dairy producers with a labor-saving, user-friendly approach to mating programs. Professional SMS evaluators work with herd managers to understand breeding objectives, evaluate each animal individually, and use research and computerized analysis to develop matings. In 2000, SMS evaluators made more than 2.1 million mating recommendations as a value-added service for thousands of herd owners throughout North America.
