Seven Holsteins by Seven Different Sires Graduate into Active-A.I. Service
PLAIN CITY, Ohio, Aug. 14, 2001 — Seven bulls, including one red-and-white
Holstein, have graduated into the A.I. industry’s largest lineup of Holstein
sires after receiving official evaluations in August from the U.S.
Department of Agriculture, Interbull and Holstein Association USA. Select
Sires now has the greatest number of active-A.I. sons of 7HO3948 MJR
Blackstar EMORY-ET*TL — who himself is in the Select Sires lineup — in the
industry, with a new graduate joining 12 paternal brothers. The six other
graduates are sired by a diverse group of bulls. They include the first son
of 7HO4059 J-Don B Star ADONIS-ET*RC*TL at Select, as well as sons of
Maizefield BELLWOOD-ET*TL, 7HO4213 Robthom INTEGRITY-ET*TL, Madawaska
AEROSTAR*TL, 7HO3257 HIGHLIGHT Mr Mark Cinder-ET*TL and 7HO3938 Ellbank
AIRLINER-ET*TL.
"This group of graduates includes the two highest sires for Net Merit
Dollars (NM$) and Cheese Merit Dollars (CM$) in the Select Sires lineup —
7HO5682 Silver-Shade MB SAUNDERS-ET and 7HO5851 Sikkema-Star Air MAGNA-ET,"
says Scott Culbertson, sire analyst, Select Sires. "It also includes the
breed’s only active-A.I. sire that’s more than +3.00 for both Udder
Composite (UC) and Predicted Transmitting Ability for Type (PTAT), 7HO5841
Sikkema-Star-W HI METRO-ET. What producers will find especially interesting
is that four of these seven graduates have inbreeding coefficients that are
well below the industry average. These sires give some exciting new options
for producers, whether they’re looking for high Total Performance Indexes
(TPIs(™)), calving ease or improved production."
Select’s Two Highest Sires for NM$, CM$
Debuting with the highest TPI at Select Sires, 7HO5851 MAGNA also will rank
in the breed’s top 10 with a TPI of +1702. An AIRLINER son from a
consistently high-producing cow family that traces to a national milk
record-holder with 54,170 pounds of milk, he was bred by Sikkema-Star
Holsteins, Oakdale, Calif. MAGNA is transmitting both milk components and
volume, with Predicted Transmitting Abilities (PTAs) of +1,752M +.11%F +92F
+.04%P +61P +606 CM$ +587 NM$. In addition, he has a low inbreeding
coefficient of 4.6. Producers can use MAGNA to sire tall, strong,
open-ribbed daughters that have outstanding feet and legs, and produce large
quantities of high-solids milk.
Now Select’s top sire for both CM$ (+624) and NM$ (+592), 7HO5682 SAUNDERS
is one of the breed’s highest for fat production with PTAs of +1,319M +.17%F
+90F +.07%P +57P. Richard G. Davis, New Sharon, Maine, bred this BELLWOOD
son, who has a low inbreeding coefficient of 4.5. His AEROSTAR dam has
produced more than 1,200 pounds of fat and 1,100 pounds of protein, and is
backed by generations of high-producing, high-scoring Dams of Merit.
Producers will look to this SUPERIOR SETTLER(™) to straighten legs, improve
foot angle, add body strength and depth, and increase rear-udder height and
width.
New Type Leaders in the Breed
Classified Excellent (92) himself, 7HO5841 HI METRO also transmits
extraordinary type to his offspring as shown by his No. 1 ranking in the
breed for Udder Composite at +3.71. Strong composite indexes for body size
(+2.00) and dairy capacity (+2.51) contribute to this HIGHLIGHT son’s PTAT
of +3.09 — the second-highest in active-A.I. Another graduate with a low
inbreeding coefficient (4.8), HI METRO was bred by Sikkema Star Holsteins-W,
Oakdale, Calif. He is the first son of Sikkema-Star-W Elt Maycy-ET*TL (one
of 7HO2236 Emprise Bell ELTON*BL’s finest daughters with 2-3 365d 36,920M
4.1% 1,524F 3.4% 1,244P) to receive a proof. HI METRO will transmit improved
protein production (+.06 PTA%P +36 PTAP), along with extraordinary udders,
style and great dairy frames.
Another graduate that will interest breeders who like show-ring type is
7HO5742 Henkeseen HILLCREST-ET, an Excellent (91) EMORY son backed by two
generations of Excellent (94) Gold Medal Dams (GMDs) that stand taller than
63 inches at the withers. With a body-composite index of +3.46, this
SUPERIOR SETTLER will sire strong, upstanding daughters with wide rumps and
rear udders, dairyness, and good depth of heel. Vernis and Trent Henkes,
Luana, Iowa, bred this graduate of Select’s Program for Genetic
Advancement(TM) (PGA(TM)).
Balancing Production and Type
Joining his father, INTEGRITY, in the Select lineup is 7HO5724
Towerview-Acres TALISMAN-ET, who was bred by Daniel Zeamer, DePere, Wis.
Backed by generations of Very Good Dams of Merit with more than 1,500 pounds
of fat, TALISMAN transmits a pleasing balance of production and type to his
daughters. He has PTA values of +1,473M +.01%F +57F -.01%P +40P +1.83 PTAT
+1423 TPI. Producers can use TALISMAN as a calving-ease sire (7 percent
difficult births in heifers) to produce open-ribbed, dairy offspring with
high, wide rear udders, strongly attached fore udders and correct teat
placement.
7HO5760 Le-Bert Aerostar LINK is another all-around graduate that will be
among the breed’s top 100 for TPI with +1489. Gilbert P. Kaufman,
Moundridge, Kan., bred this AEROSTAR son that is now recognized as a
SUPERIOR SETTLER. LINK is backed by several generations of high-producing
cows with 4.5 percent fat test, which contribute to his PTAs of +1,561M
+.04%F +66F -.02%P +42P +1.58 PTAT. He is siring smooth, well-balanced
daughters with shallow, well-attached udders.
New Choice for Red-and-White Breeders
With high components, solid type and good production backed by a deep cow
family, 7HO5785 Sure-View Adon ADAM-RED-ET is creating interest among
breeders of red-and-white cattle. Daughters in both the United States and
Switzerland contribute to his PTAs of +685M +.05%F +36F +.04% +31P +262 CM$
+1.26 PTAT. Douglas Schmitt, Hilbert, Wis., bred this ADONIS*RC son out of
generations of Gold Medal Dams with more than 30,000 pounds of milk.
Producers can expect ADAM-RED to transmit udders that have a deep cleft,
high and wide attachments, and close teat placement, along with
medium-sized, dairy frames with good width.
