New Holstein Lineup Has 24 Sires Higher Than +2.00 for Type

PLAIN CITY, Ohio, Aug. 16, 2001 — Today Select Sires introduced its new lineup of 90 active-A.I. Holstein sires, 24 of which have Predicted Transmitting Abilities for Type (PTATs) higher than +2.00, which makes them some of the breed’s best for improving conformation. The lineup also features nine of top 25 Holstein sires for Type-Production Index (TPI™). This follows the quarterly publishing of dairy sire evaluations by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, InterBull and Holstein Association USA.

"When today’s producers consider type, they’re thinking about conformation that helps cows be more productive and stay in the herd longer," says Lon Peters, dairy sire analyst and manager of the SELECT MATING SERVICE™ (SMS™) program, Select Sires. "While Select’s lineup includes bulls that will sire national show winners, many of these sires are expert at improving feet and legs, and udders — which is important in every herd. The 24 Select sires that are higher than +2.00 for type also average 1,245 pounds of milk and 38 pounds of fat, which means that producers can improve both type and production in a single mating."

Five Sires Higher Than +2.00 for all Type Composites

Of the 24 Select sires that have PTATs greater than +2.00, five have the elite distinction of being higher than that benchmark for all four linear composite indexes — Udder Composite (UC), Body Size Composite (BD), Feet and Leg Composite (FLC) and Dairy Capacity Composite (DC). Three of these are sons of 7HO3948 MJR Blackstar EMORY-ET*TL, Excellent (97), who is well-known for his ability to transmit production from strength. These three are continuing in their sire’s tradition, and include 7HO6352 Four-of-a-Kind ELAND-ET*TL, Excellent (94), Wil-Hart E LOUIE-ET, Excellent (92), and 7HO6131 Regancrest Emory DERRY-ET, Excellent (94). The other two elite-composite sires are 7HO5157 Regancrest Elton DURHAM-ET*TL, a maternal brother to DERRY, and 7HO8419 Mr Jed APPROVAL-ET*TL, whose second-crop daughters are competing well in the show ring as heifers.

The two top sires for PTAT within the Holstein Association’s Top-100 TPI list are both in the Select Sires lineup. 7HO5841 Sikkema-Star-W HI METRO-ET, an Excellent (92) son of 7HO3257 HIGHLIGHT Mr Mark Cinder-ET*TL, graduated into active-A.I. service with a PTAT of +3.09. He also has the breed’s No. 1 index for Udder Composite (+3.71) and a TPI value of +1563. Once again, ELAND is the highest Holstein for PTAT at +3.38.

Three Higher Than +2,000 PTAM and +2.00 PTAT

Three of only four sires to have both Predicted Transmitting Abilities for Milk (PTAM) of more than +2,000 and PTAT values greater than +2.00 now have semen available from Select Sires. For the second, consecutive quarter, 7HO5708 Fustead Emory BLITZ-ET, has the best PTAM of the lineup (+2,740 PTAM), which is balanced with a high type value of +2.46 PTAT. Another May 2001 graduate, 7HO8416 Nunesdale Bellwood ABE-ET, is a SUPERIOR SETTLER™ with +2,168 PTAM +2.67 PTAT. 7HO5375 Mara-Thon BW MARSHALL-ET*TL rounds out this special trio with +2,125 PTAM +2.55 PTAT.

Select’s lineup features a total of eight sires that literally transmit more than a ton of milk, including three EMORY sons. Joining BLITZ with PTAMs higher than +2.00 are his paternal brothers, 7HO5630 Nors C CALVIN-ET*TL (+2,230 PTAM, +1.56 PTAT) and 7HO5615 Art-Acres EMORY KEN-ET*TL (+2,025 PTAM, +1.55 PTAT). Additional sires that continue to exceed +2,000 PTAM include 7HO4637 Ladys-Manor WINCHESTER-ET*TL (+2,091 PTAM-M), 7HO5442 Muranda Mandel MOE-ET*TL (+2,078 PTAM) and 7HO5376 Mar-River Abel OUTLAW-ET*TL (+2,046 PTAM).

In addition, 20 more sires in the lineup have PTAMs ranging from +1,500 to 1,999.

Nine Select Sires Surpass +1600 TPI

Once the dust settled from the August evaluations, nine Select sires ranked among the breed’s top 25 for TPI. The lineup is led by a new graduate, 7HO5851 Sikkema-Star Air MAGNA-ET, who is sixth in the breed for TPI with +1702. MAGNA is transmitting both milk components and volume, with PTAs of +1,752M +.11% +92F +.04% +61P +606 Cheese Merit Dollars (CM$) +587 Net Merit Dollars (NM$).

Next in line is a May graduate, 7HO5710 Pagen-Ernwood DANE-ET*TL, with +1658 TPI-M and the lineup’s third-highest NM$ value of +576. 7HO6247 Nunesdale Kismet ELATION-ET*TL, who is solid in all categories and has a high Feet and Leg Composite of +2.41, earned a TPI of +1649. In the breed’s 17th and 18th spots for TPI, respectively, are MARSHALL (+1637) and 7HO6250 Ricecrest EMERSON-ET*BL (+1636).

Also in the top 20 is a new graduate, 7HO5682 Silver-Shade MB SAUNDERS-ET, who is the highest Select sire for both CM$ (+624) and NM$ (+592), and has a TPI of +1627. The three additional high-TPI sires include 7HO5439 Applenotch Celsius CONGO-ET*TL with +1620 TPI and a high Productive Life value of 3.1; another EMORY son, 7HO5687 Sandy-Valley FORBIDDEN-ET*TL, with +1606 TPI; and ABE, a high milk, high type sire with +1604 TPI. Eleven more Select sires earned TPI values ranging from +1500 to +1599 in August.

Second-Crop Daughters Add to Leadership Positions

Information from thousands of second-crop daughters was added to evaluations, strengthening the proofs of a number of sires. 7HO4324 Ridge-Heights BENDIX-ET*TL received data from 864 new daughters in 117 herds, giving him PTAs of +1,692M +52F +55P. Perennial customer-satisfaction sires, such as 9HO1833 Marcrest ENCORE*TL, 9HO1729 Brabant Star PATRON and 7HO3707 Paradise-R Cleitus MATHIE*TL, reinforced their positions in the industry by respectively adding 655 daughters (11,178 daughters total), 2,005 daughters (14,241 daughters total) and 1,300 daughters (31,847 daughters total).
