Three High-Components Breeds Sires Added to Select Sires Lineup
PLAIN CITY, Ohio, Nov. 27, 2001 — Dairy producers who work with the
high-components breeds now have three new sires with high Production-Type
Indexes (PTIs) to consider when planning their breeding programs.
The availability of these sires follows the quarterly publishing of the
dairy sire evaluations by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, InterBull
and breed associations. With the November graduation of a Jersey, a
Brown Swiss and a Guernsey from its Program for Genetic Advancement™
(PGA™) progeny-testing program, the Select Sires federation of 10 member
cooperatives now markets semen from 36 active-A.I. sires in the Ayrshire,
Brown Swiss, Guernsey and Jersey breeds.
"Producers who work with these breeds benefit from a wide selection of
genetic choices due to the PGA’s long-term focus on developing bulls
with a balance of production and type," says Blaine Crosser, sire analyst,
Select Sires. "These graduates join the industry’s largest high-components
breeds lineup, which has a reputation for highly reliable sires
that create success in both the milking parlor and on the tanbark. For
example, 7JE356 Lester SAMBO - who is known for transmitting high components
and type along with solid production - was the premier sire at the 2001
All-American Jersey Show in Louisville, Ky., marking the seventh year out of
10 that a Select sire has earned this honor."
BARBER Sons Headline Jersey Lineup
7JE498 Eastglen Barber ELEVATION, a 7JE290 WF/L&M Duncan BARBER-ET son,
graduated from the PGA to join his paternal brother, 7JE488 Long Distance
Barber BARKLY - the industry’s highest BARBER son for PTI (+311) - in active-A.I.
service. Both are ideal service sires for the many daughters and granddaughters
of 7JE254 Mason Boomer Sooner BERRETTA in the Jersey population.
Graduating into the breed’s top 20 for PTI with +255, ELEVATION has PTAs of
+1,333M +57F +38P +411 Fluid Merit Dollars (FM$) +1.5T. Bred by Eastglen Farms,
Laurens, S.C., he is out of a high-testing Very Good (89) Rocky Hill SKY LINE
daughter that has the frame, width and rear udder attachment that made BARBER
a logical mating. Like his pedigree suggests, ELEVATION will sire tall, dairy
cows with high, wide rear udders and snugly attached fore udders.
BARKLY’s Predicted Transmitting Abilities (PTAs) for both milk (+1,903
PTAM) and type (+1.6 PTAT) have climbed since he graduated into active-A.I.
service in August. He is now the breed’s top Jersey for both Net Merit Dollars
(NM$) at +486 and FM$ with +537. In addition, he moved up to third place on the
breed’s PTI list at +311, and is one of only three in the breed’s top 10 for PTI
that is plus for the critical type trait: udder depth. The breed’s second-best
production sire (+1,903 PTAM), BARKLY also transmits shallow udders (S0.7).
BARKLY daughters are much like the BARBER daughters, with extreme dairyness and
excellent udder attachments, particularly in the rear.
Seven Jerseys, or 40 percent of the Select Sires lineup, have PTA values
for type of +2.0 or higher again this quarter. Leading this group and ranking
third in the breed at +2.8 PTAT (IB-M/USA) is SAMBO. Tied for fourth at +2.7
PTAT (both IB-M/USA) are 7JE329 Sooner CENTURION-ET, a components specialist,
and 7JE442 Rock Ella PARAMOUNT-ET, a sire of many top-selling offspring in
the fall sales. The fourth Select sire in the breed’s top 10 is 7JE472 BW
PARADE-ET, a SUPERIOR SETTLER™ whose type proof (+2.6 PTAT) has increased
each quarter since his May 2001 release.
No. 2 PTI Sire Headlines Highly Reliable Brown Swiss Lineup
A genetic consistent source of top production and high components, 7BS733
Misa Jetway MASCOT ET maintains the breed’s No. 2 position for PTI at +330
(IB-M/USA) for the third consecutive sire summary. This February 2001 PGA
graduate also ranks second for protein (+61 PTAP), third for fat (+79 PTAF)
and sixth for milk (+1,803 PTAM) with an Interbull proof. A son of Forest
Lawn Simon JETWAY ET (M), MASCOT sires extremely tall, clean, flat-boned daughters
that have high rear udder attachments.
When breeders look at the Brown Swiss active-A.I. list ranked according to
PTI, they will find that 7BS715 Rolling View Jetway CHIME ET (+219 PTI) is
the highest-ranking Forest Lawn Simon JETWAY (M) son for PTA Type at +0.9.
CHIME also is one of the top 10 in the breed for fat with PTAs of +.09% +61F.
His daughters are dairy, deep-bodied cows with snug udder attachments.
Select’s newest Brown Swiss graduate bred by Forest Lawn Farm, Wausau, Wis.,
7BS736 Forest Lawn PHT JAMARR ET, is filling the void that his high production
sire, 7BS693 Top Acres Dotson PROPHET ET, left when his semen was no longer available.
Select’s top milk sire, JAMARR currently ranks second in the breed for milk
(+1,899M), fourth for FM$ (+507), eighth for NM$ (+450), seventh for fat (+70F),
eighth for PTI (+281) and ninth for CM$ (+442). His dam is an Excellent (90)
granddaughter of Idyl Wild Improve Jinx, Excellent (3E), a brood cow that
literally changed the breed. JAMARR daughters have a will to milk coupled
with outstanding frames, feet, legs and rear udders.
Including three other components specialists, the Select Sires lineup of
six Brown Swiss sires average 86 percent reliability, indicating that Select’s
PGA graduates have been well-sampled and enter the marketplace with reliable
performance data.
First And Second In The Guernsey Breed
The two highest Guernseys for PTI are at Select Sires. A components
specialist, 9GU141 Blackwater Lord AMEN is No. 1 at +258 PTI. He is first in the
breed for fat (+72 PTAF), and second for both protein (+58 PTAP) and CM$ (+394).
AMEN is also fifth for NM$ (+370) and sixth for milk (+1,535 PTAM).
The second-high PTI (+227) sire is a 7GU357 Marodore Enhancer ROY-ET, a new
PGA graduate bred by Hannah Kohler, Baltimore, Ohio. This Sherma Victory Ellas
ENHANCER ranks third in the breed for three key traits: PTA Milk with +1,613,
PTA Type with +2.0 and PTA Protein with +44. He also is among the breed’s best
10 for fat (+50F), CM$ (+334), FM$ (+369) and NM$ (+337). His daughters have a
tremendous will to milk along with great dairy strength, substance of bone and
width through the rump, with strong rear udders and correct teat placement.
Three of the breed’s top four type improvers are at Select Sires. They
include 9GU134 Tamaracks Perfectos VALIANT-ET (+2.3), who sires tall offspring
with stylish front ends, ROY (+2.0 PTAT) and 7GU350 Sherma Enhancer Rosie NITRO
(+1.8), a sire noted for shallow udder depth and outstanding rear udders.
Top Ayrshires For Seven Traits
Select Sires’ Ayrshire lineup maintains a genetic stronghold, with the top
two positions on the active-A.I. list for PTI, Milk, NM$, PTAP, PTAF and CM$.
After increasing in all production traits this summary, 7AY62 Ardrossan
Marathon WANDRINGEYE regains No. 1 status for six categories with ¾ +1,448 PTAM +58 PTAF
+48 PTAP +452 NM$ +464 CM$ +287 PTI. This breed outlier continues to attract
the attention of producers who are looking for dairy frames and strongly attached
udders that can generate top production records with high components (+.01%F and +.02%P).
Now No.2 in the breed for PTI (+271), NM$ (+440) and CM$ (+437), 9AY69
Palmyra Lover’s HELIGO’s-ET is still the breed’s best for FM$ (+472). He transmits
scale, shallow udders and high rear-udder attachments.
Three months after graduating into active-A.I. service, 9AY73 Covey-Farms
Ramses RUNAWAY-ET now is tied with WANDRINGEYE for No.1 in the breed for PTAM
with +1,448. He also ranks among the breed’s top 5 for NM$ (+360), CM$ (+360),
PTAF (+48) and PTI (+226). RUNAWAY’s full brother, 7AY60 Covey-Farms Ramses
RECRUITER, is one of the breed’s top 10 for seven traits, with +1,309M +43F +35P
+323 NM$ +319 CM$ +354 FM$ +200 PTI (IB-M/USA).
