New No. 2 TPI Sire Highlights Balanced Holstein Lineup

PLAIN CITY, Ohio, Nov. 21, 2001 — After receiving his second official evaluation in November, 7HO5851 Sikkema-Star Air MAGNA-ET*TV moved from sixth to second on the Holstein breed’s Type-Production Index listing, and now leads the industry’s largest active-A.I. lineup at Select Sires with a TPI™ of +1749. This 89-bull active lineup also features nine sires with Predicted Transmitting Abilities (PTAs) for milk that are higher than +2,000 pounds, nine sires that exceed +2.50 for PTA Type, and eight graduates with balanced credentials for production and type. The release of this information follows the quarterly publishing of the dairy sire evaluations by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, InterBull and Holstein Association USA.

"Access to the extreme, balanced genetics of MAGNA is just the tip of the iceberg within Select’s new active-A.I. Holstein lineup," says Ron Long, vice president, dairy sire procurement, Select Sires. "Like 29 other Holsteins, MAGNA has earned Select’s high-fertility SUPERIOR SETTLER™ designation. In addition, he is one of 29 Select Holstein sires that are plus for both fat and protein percentages, one of 31 sires to be higher than +400 for PTA Net Merit Dollars, and one of 25 that are more than +2.00 for type. The greatest benefit for producers is that whether they prefer semen from sires transmitting a ton of milk with sound type, or high type with solid production, they’ll find the semen to be readily available from Select Sires because of our advanced experience in semen production."

Nine +2,000 PTAM Sires Average +1.68 for Type

Nine Select sires in the active-A.I. lineup literally transmit a ton of milk. These milk specialists also average an impressive +1.68 PTAT, with three of the nine higher than +2.00 for type. For the third consecutive sire summary, 7HO5708 Fustead Emory BLITZ-ET*TV, a son of the popular 7HO3948 MJR Blackstar EMORY-ET*TV, has Select’s highest values for PTAM (+2,550) and PTA Fluid Merit Dollars (+704). BLITZ also is in Select’s top 10 for type (+2.51 PTAT) because of his daughters’ wide rumps, breed-leading udder attachments, correct feet and legs, and extreme frames. Two more ton-of-milk sires to transmit this extreme balance of production and type are 7HO8416 Nunesdale Bellwood ABE-ET*TV (+2,171 PTAM, +2.18 PTAT) and 7HO5375 Mara-Thon BW MARSHALL-ET*TV (+2,109 PTAM, +2.58 PTAT).

The additional sires with PTAMs higher than +2,000 include two more EMORY sons, 7HO5630 Nors C Emory CALVIN-ET*CV (+2,303 PTAM, +1.52 PTAT) and 7HO5615 Art-Acres EMORY KEN-ET*TV (+2,051 PTAM, +1.55 PTAT). Twenty-one additional sires in the lineup have PTA Milk values ranging from +1,500 to +1,999. Just missing the +2,000 benchmark was another November PGA graduate, 7HO5752 Sullys Bellwood SUPREME-ET*TV. This new SUPERIOR SETTLER is Select’s 10th-high sire for PTAM with +1,936 PTAM +56F +50P +511 FM$ +1.13T.

Nine +2.50 Type Specialists Average +1,289 PTA Milk

Consistent with previous summaries, Select Sires’ lineup includes 25 of the most-prominent +2.00 PTAT sires in the industry.Nine of these exceed +2.50 PTAT while averaging an impressive +1,289 PTAM - another indicator of the genetic strength and balance available to producers from Select Sires. These balanced type-improvers include the breed’s No. 1 type sire, 7HO6352 Four-Of-A-Kind ELAND-ET*TV, an EMORY son with +3.37 PTAT.

ELAND is joined by 7HO5841 Sikkema-Star-W HI METRO-ET*TV (+2.95T), a SUPERIOR SETTLER who also is the breed’s No.1 sire for Udder Composite (UDC) at +3.30. Three maternal brothers, 7HO5157 Regancrest Elton DURHAM-ET*CV (+2.93T), 7HO6131 Regancrest Emory DERRY-ET*TV (+2.71T) and 9HO2458 Regancrest DAWSTON-ET*TV - a new graduate and SUPERIOR SETTLER by 9HO1833 Marcrest ENCORE*TV with +2.28 PTAT, continue the Dellia cow family’s legacy for breed-leading type.

Rounding out the type specialists higher than +2.50 PTAT are 7HO8419 Mr Jed APPROVAL-ET*TV (+2.74T), MARSHALL (+2.58T) and three additional EMORY sons - 7HO5592 Wil-Hart E LOUIE-ET*TV (+2.74T), 7HO5653 Halo Emory BRASS-ET*TV (+2.53T) and BLITZ (+2.51T).

Five of these type improvers have the unique distinction of being higher than +2.00 for all four linear composite indexes - udder composite (UDC), body size composite (BDC), feet and leg composite (FLC) and dairy capacity composite (DC). ELAND, LOUIE, APPROVAL, DURHAM and DERRY are the only sires in the breed to meet these stringent criteria.

The Most +1600 TPI Sires In Industry

Holstein breeders looking for the complete package of high production and type often turn to TPI values as an indicator of balance. The Best Source of EMORY Sons
