New Holstein Lineup Has 26
Sires Higher Than +2.00 for Type
PLAIN CITY, Ohio, Feb. 18, 2002 — Select Sires has introduced its new lineup
of 89 active-A.I. Holsteins, 26 of which have Predicted Transmitting
Abilities for Type (PTATs) higher than +2.00, which makes them some of the
breed’s best for improving conformation. The lineup also features the breed’s
No. 2 sire for Type-Production Index (TPI™), 7HO5851 Sikkema-Star Air
MAGNA-ET*TV, and six others within the top 25. This follows the quarterly
publishing of dairy sire evaluations released on Feb. 12 by the U.S.
Department of Agriculture, InterBull and Holstein Association USA.
"When today’s producers consider type, they’re thinking about conformation
that helps cows be more productive and stay in the herd longer," says Lon
Peters, dairy sire analyst and manager of Select Mating Service™ (SMS™),
Select Sires. "While Select’s lineup includes bulls that sired All-American
nominees this year, many of these sires are expert at improving feet and
legs, and udders - which is important in every herd. The 26 Select sires
that are higher than +2.00 for type also average +1,284 pounds of milk, +37
pounds of fat and +33 pounds of protein, which means that producers can
improve both type and production in a single mating."
MAGNA Surpasses +1800 TPI
Since becoming the No. 2 TPI sire in November, just his second sire summary
after graduating into active-A.I. service, MAGNA has added 57 TPI points for
a TPI value of +1806 - to put him just one point behind the breed leader
this quarter. This 7HO3938 Ellbank AIRLINER son also is second for PTA Fat
pounds, and has one of the most balanced sets of PTA values in the industry
with +1,931M +.10%F +95F +.03%P +64P +654CM$ +2.24T.
Six additional Select sires surpassed +1600 TPI, with all ranking among the
breed’s top 25 for TPI. They include 7HO6250 Ricecrest EMERSON-ET*BL,TV
(+1670 TPI), 7HO5375 Mara-Thon BW MARSHALL-ET*TV (+1665 TPI), 7HO5687
Sandy-Valley FORBIDDEN-ET*TV (+1663 TPI), 7HO6247 Nunesdale Kismet
ELATION-ET*TV (+1645 TPI), 7HO5439 Applenotch Celsius CONGO-ET*TV (+1620
TPI) and 7HO5442 Muranda Mandel MOE-ET*TV (+1608 TPI).
Enhancing Longevity Through Functional Type
Consistent with previous summaries, Select Sires’ lineup includes 26 of the
most prominent +2.00 PTAT sires in the industry. Seven of these exceed +2.50
PTAT while averaging more than 1,000 pounds of milk and 31 pounds of
protein - another indicator of the lineup’s genetic strength and balance.
Not only is 7HO6352 Four-Of-A-Kind ELAND-ET*TV once again the breed’s
highest sire for PTAT at +3.36, but he also has extremely high indexes for
dairy capacity composite (+2.99 DC), feet-and-leg composite (+2.43 FLC),
udder composite (+2.52 UDC) and body size composite (+2.38 BC). Of the three
additional sires to meet the stringent criteria of having all four type
composites higher than +2.00, two are in the Select lineup, including
7HO5157 Regancrest Elton DURHAM-ET*CV (+2.90 PTAT) and 7HO8419 Mr Jed
APPROVAL-ET*TV (+2.74 PTAT).
The breed’s highest sire for udder composite - 7HO5841 Sikkema-Star-W HI
METRO-ET*CV (+3.59 UDC) - also is the second-highest Holstein for PTAT at
+3.23. Rounding out the type specialists higher than +2.50 PTAT are MARSHALL
(+2.55 PTAT), 7HO6131 Regancrest Emory DERRY-ET*TV (a maternal brother to
DURHAM with +2.55 PTAT) and 7HO5653 Halo Emory BRASS-ET*TV (+2.51 PTAT).
EMORY Sons Continue Dominance
Fourteen sons of 7HO3948 MJR Blackstar EMORY-ET*TV - who is still in
active-A.I. himself - now are in the Select lineup. Like their father, these
sires are transmitting production from strength.
While all consistently sire nice udders, substance of bone, and good feet
and legs, producers can select among them to improve additional traits, such
as components (e.g., 7HO5596 Margene Jade GEMSTONE-ET*TV - +.05%F +.05%P,
FORBIDDEN - +.01%F +.03%P) or extreme milk production (e.g., 7HO5708 Fustead
Emory BLITZ-ET*TV - +2,409 PTAM, 7HO5630 Nors C Emory CALVIN-ET*CV - +2,284
PTAM).
Three Higher Than +2,000 PTAM and +2.00 PTAT
Three of only five sires to have PTAs for milk of more than +2,000 and PTAT
values greater than +2.00 are at Select Sires. For the fourth consecutive
summary, BLITZ has Select’s highest numbers for PTAM and PTA Fluid Merit
Dollars (+655), and a PTAT of +2.41. Two additional ton-of-milk sires to
transmit this extreme balance of production and type are 7HO8416 Nunesdale
Bellwood ABE-ET*TV (+2,228 PTAM, +2.01 PTAT) and MARSHALL (+2,168 PTAM,
+2.55 PTAT).
The lineup features four more sires that have PTAM values higher than
+2,000 pounds. These elite individuals include CALVIN (+2,284 PTAM, +1.55
PTAT), MOE (+2,225 PTAM, +1.11 PTAT), 7HO4637 Ladys-Manor WINCHESTER-ET*TV
(+2,180 PTAM, +.55 PTAT) and 7HO5491 Lutz-Meadows MB MOZER-ET*TV (+2,025
PTAM, 1.64 PTAT). Twenty-seven additional sires in the lineup have PTAMs
that are between +1,500 and +2,000.
Second-Crop Daughters Add to Leadership Positions
Information from thousands of second-crop daughters was added to
evaluations of Select sires, further strengthening their proofs. One such
sire, 7HO4937Wa-Del BUBBA-ET*TV received data from 965 new daughters in 399
herds, giving him PTAs of +1,921M +50F +43P +1.45T +1402 TPI. Components
specialist 7HO4951 Vir-Clar MEADOWLANE*TV added information from 244
daughters in 150 herds to his proof, yielding a new proof of +1,067M +.14%F
+73F +.06%P +47P +595 CM$ +1544 TPI +1.00T.
Perennial customer-satisfaction sires, such as 9HO1729 Brabant Star
PATRON-ET*TV, 7HO3707 Paradise-R Cleitus MATHIE*CV and 7HO4213 Robthom
INTEGRITY-ET*TV reinforced their positions in the industry by adding a
significant number of U.S. daughters to their summaries.
