Six New Holsteins Enter Select Sires Lineup
PLAIN CITY, Ohio, Nov. 12, 2002 — Semen is now available from
five Holstein bulls that are new graduates into active-A.I.
service at Select Sires, as well as the No. 1 red-and-white sire
for Type-Production Index (TPI™). This follows the announcement
of new official evaluations by the U.S. Department of Agriculture,
Interbull and Holstein Association USA on Nov. 11. Two of these
graduates will be in the Holstein breed’s top 35 for TPI, with
all of these individuals offering an impressive balance of
improved type and production.
"Half of the Select Sires graduating class will appear in the top
50 of Holstein Association USA’s TPI list this November," says
Blaine Crosser, vice president, dairy products and services, Select
Sires. "These individuals represent a nice blend of diverse pedigrees
(10 different bulls represented as sires and maternal grandsires).
As a bonus, this group has specialists for milk components, milk
yield and economically important type traits, such as udders,
feet and legs."
High TPIs and Dollar Values
With a TPI of +1600, 9HO2575 Peckenstein Form BRET-ET*TV is
an Excellent (90) Shen-Val NV FORMATION-ET son that will rank high
on the Holstein USA TPI list. He has high Predicted Transmitting
Abilities (PTAs) for key measures of profitability, ranking fifth
at Select Sires for Net Merit Dollars (+523 NM$), and seventh for
both Fluid Merit Dollars (+548 FM$) and Cheese Merit Dollars (+522 CM$).
Bred by David R. Peckens, Howell, Mich., BRET is backed by three
generations of Dams of Merit with more than 1,470 pounds of fat. This
new graduate has PTAs of +1,746 Milk, +1.47 Udder Composite (UDC) and
+1.59 Feet-and-Leg Composite (FLC), underscoring his ability to transmit
dairyness, snugly attached udders, steep foot angle and improved rump width.
Just one TPI point behind at +1599 is 7HO6081 Glen-Toctin LUCAS-ET*CV , an
Excellent (93), 250 FATAL son who is second for PTA Protein in Select’s lineup.
This SUPERIOR SETTLER™ is extreme for milk components with PTAs of +908M
+.03%F +39F +.14%P +62P +519CM$ 80%Rel., and has high numbers for type
(+2.15 PTAT 75%Rel.). Bred by Glen-Toctin Farm, Jefferson, Md., he is out
of three generations of high-producing, high-testing Gold Medal Dams. Producers
can use LUCAS to sire moderate-sized cows with tremendous dairyness, rump width
and well-attached udders with strong ligaments and close teat placement.

Now the highest red-and-white sire for TPI with +1527, 6HO0817 Ja-Bob
JORDAN-RED-ET was bred by Ja-Bob Holsteins, Eaton, Ohio, and is the only
proven Mercy PHIDEAUX-ET son available today. He’s backed by four generations
of Excellent Dams of Merit with more than 29,000 pounds of milk, and has
production PTAs of +679M +.13%F +55F +.05%P +33P 82%Rel. More than two points
for both PTAT and UDC, JORDAN-RED can be used to breed cows with scale,
strength, a steep foot angle as well as udders that have high, wide rear
attachments, snug fore attachments and shallow depth. Select Sires has
acquired exclusive marketing rights for JORDAN-RED in North America.
7HO6194 Mr MILLENNIUM-ET*TV is a SUPERIOR SETTLER that will be in the
top 50 of the breed for TPI. Sired by Startmore RUDOLPH-ET, he is from
the well-known Miss Mark Maui, an Excellent (95), 7HO0980 Walkway Chief
MARK daughter that was the 1994 All-American Junior 2-Year-Old and has
produced 5-11 365d 53,590M 2,222F 1,567P. MILLENNIUM was bred by Kietzman,
Sigworth and Breitbach, Holy Cross, Iowa, and has PTAs of +1,441M +.03%F
+59F +0.2%P +47P +496CM$ 91%Rel., +1.40 PTAT 87%Rel., +1571 TPI. This
calving-ease bull is siring tall, upstanding daughters with strength,
depth and extremely wide rumps along with firmly attached fore udders,
high rear udders and shallow udder depth.
All-Around Performance
Another RUDOLPH son, 7HO6055 D-P-M Rudolph BRIGHT-ET*TV, enters the lineup
with Select Sires’ highest value for productive life (+3.3 53%Rel.). Bred
by the Angel Syndicate, Falmouth, Mich., he is from three generations of
high-scoring dams that produced more than 34,700 pounds of milk. This
graduate of Select’s Program for Genetic Advancement™ (PGA™) has
PTA values of +1,362M +17F +41P +443CM$ 86%Rel., +1.45T, +1490 TPI.
Producers can expect BRIGHT to sire daughters with good mobility and
steep foot angle, as well as wide rumps, strong fore-udder attachments
and shallow udder depth.
Rounding out the graduating class is 7HO6151 Hartline Formation GAGE-ET*TV,
a Shen-Val NV LM FORMATION-ET son bred by Hartline Valley Farms Inc.,
Marietta, Ohio. He’s backed by three generations of Dams of Merit that
have produced more than 29,000 pounds of milk and 1,100 pounds of fat.
GAGE has balanced PTAs of +1,498M +41F +35P +439FM$ 81%Rel., +1.44T
78%Rel., +1415TPI. He is transmitting tall, open daughters with good frames,
improved depth of heel, high, wide rear-udder attachments and close teat placement.
