EMERSON Son One of Six to Graduate into Select Sires Lineup
PLAIN CITY, Ohio, Feb. 15, 2005 — On February 14, Select Sires introduced
six new Holstein bulls into active-A.I. service, including its first
proven son of 7HO6250 Ricecrest EMERSON-ET*BL. On the same day, USDA,
Interbull and the Holstein Association USA released official dairy-sire
summaries that reflected a new genetic base for nearly all of the traits
evaluated.
"Establishing a new genetic base lowers the Predicted
Transmitting Ability (PTA) values but it does not change the overall
rankings of the sires," says Chuck Sattler, Vice President-Genetic
Programs, Select Sires. "The six new sires that we graduated from the
Program for Genetic Advancement™ (PGA™) offer a wide variety of
genetic options. However, producers will need to adjust to the change in
the magnitude of the new numbers before selecting those sires that fit
their breeding goals."
Among Breed's Best
Sampled in Canada through Select Sires' PGAC program, 7HO6794
Ricecrest EMMETT-ET*TV is one of the first EMERSON sons to enter
active-A.I. He is No.14 on the Canadian Lifetime Profit Index (LPI) at
+1823. He also is the highest for protein yield on the top 100 LPI list
at +85 Estimated Breeding Value (EBV). Plus, he is a calving ease sire
based on Canadian data that indicates 91% unassisted births. In the
U.S., EMMETT is one of the breed's best for protein with PTAs of
+1,390M -.01%F +48F +.07%P +61P (82% Rel.). His grandam is
Ricecrest Sothwind Kaye-ET, a hallmark cow for transmitting production.
Like his sire, EMMETT sires dairyness coupled with strength and good
mobility, resulting in a +1.21 Feet-and-Legs Composite (FL). He is also
a SUPERIOR SETTLER™ and a Herdlife Builder™.
7HO6863 Quickland Kilo MAX-ET*TV debuts as Select's No. 2 milk
sire and one of the breed's top five at +2,193M. He sires the same high
solids that his sire, 7HO4960 SFL Converse KILO-ET, was recognized for
(+41F +52P 80% Rel). This new SUPERIOR
SETTLER fits all milk markets with indexes of +377 Net Merit Dollars
(NM$), +352 Cheese Merit Dollars (CM$), and +425 Fluid Merit Dollars
(FM$). This extreme production sire is rather unique because he has high
composite scores for udders (+.61 UD) plus feet and legs (+1.36 FL). A
+1594 Type-Production Index (TPI™) places MAX on Holstein's Top 100
list.
The second new high-components KILO son is 7HO6735
Pleasant-Meadow AVANTAGE-ET*TV. His dam is a Madawaska AEROSTAR daughter
with nearly 1,000 pounds of fat and protein as a two-year-old. As his
pedigree suggests, AVANTAGE is among Select's top 20 sires for fat
(+.01% +47F), protein (+.03%P +43P), and feet-and-legs (+1.71 FL) at 86%
Rel. AVANTAGE also sires significant height and width of rear udder.
At +1595 TPI, 7HO6750 Canyon-BREEZE Lantz Anch-ET*TV is a new
Top 100 TPI sire that balances solid production (+1,382M +47F +48P 81%
Rel.) with sound type (+1.65T 78% Rel.) and great mobility (+1.79 FL).
This SUPERIOR SETTLER is the second Ricecrest LANTZ-ET to graduate from
the PGA, tracing back to the same high-yielding cow family that produced
the type specialist 7HO6753 CANYON-Breeze Storm Atom-ET.
7HO6834 Art-Acres Mtoto DALE 448-ET*TV is the No. 2 feet-and-leg
improver at Select Sires. This Carol Prelude MTOTO-ET son also is one of
the most-consistent sires across all type traits with PTAs of +1.75T
+1.03 UD +2.21 FL +1.27 Body Composite (BD) +1.47 Dairy Composite (D) at
80% Rel. In addition, this Herdlife BuilderTM stands out in all three
health traits with a low Somatic Cell Score at 2.70 SCS, a high
Productive Life at +2.0 PL, and a high Daughter Pregnancy Rate at +1.3
DPR.
The latest 7HO5157 Regancrest Elton DURHAM-ET son to graduate
from the PGA is 7HO7075 Savage-Leigh LELAND-ET*TV. A graduate of the PGA
SUPER SAMPLER™ program, he was widely used, resulting in an initial
summary with 155 daughters in 103 herds (90% Rel.). Another Herdlife
Builder LELAND balances positive components (+.08%F +.01%P) and a low
2.66 SCS with outstanding type (+1.82T).
