Five New Breed Leaders Join Select Sires High-Components Lineup

PLAIN CITY, Ohio, Feb. 22, 2005 — On February 14, 2005 Select Sires released semen from two new proven Jerseys, two Brown Swiss sires, and one new Ayrshire sire. On the same day, USDA, Interbull and the breed associations released official dairy-sire summaries that reflected a genetic base change in nearly all of the traits evaluated.

"Establishing a new genetic base lowers the Predicted Transmitting Ability (PTA) values but it doesn't change the overall rankings of the sires," says Chuck Sattler, Vice President-Genetic Programs, Select Sires. "The five new sires that we graduated offer a wide variety of genetic options. However, producers will need to adjust to the change in the magnitude of the new numbers before selecting those sires that fit their breeding goals."

Select Sires dominates the Jersey Performance Indexes™ (JPI™) with nine proven sires that are at +177 or higher. Three of the top nine are extreme components sires, all sired by ISDK Fyn LEMVIG, and all from very strong cow families.

One of two LEMVIG sons released in February is 7JE622 Ferreira Lemvig PIRANHA-ET. He starts his active-A.I. career as the No. 2 proven sire with +249 JPI. PIRANHA is among the breed's best-10 sires for both fat and protein yield plus all three profitability values with Predicted Transmitting Abilities (PTA) of +910M +.24%F +87F +.07%P +46P +438 Net Merit Dollars (NM$) +473 Cheese Merit Dollars (CM$) +372 Fluid Merit Dollars (FM$) and a low 2.85 Somatic Cell Score (SCS). PIRANHA comes from the heart of the highly acclaimed Golden family, anchored by Golden MBSB Of Twin Haven-ET (EX-94). Group-sampled through the American Jersey Cattle Association, PIRANHA already has 97 daughters in 49 herds, resulting in an 86% Rel. on his second summary.

Duplicating the same high solids and JPI (fifteenth at +183) is 7JE617 Lemvig RUDY with PTA values of +.24%F +60F +.10%P +30P, +314 NM$, +351 CM$, 82% Rel. Like PIRANHA, he sires a low 2.91 SCS, which spells profit for today's Jersey producers. RUDY's dam is a three-year-old 7JE254 Mason Boomer Sooner BERRETTA with over 1,800F and who, in turn, is out of two Excellent (91) dams with over 1,000F. Unlike most LEMVIG bloodlines, RUDY sires tall, wide-framed cows that also excel in foot angle and udder clearance.

The third LEMVIG son is the November release 7JE620 Sunset Canyon MAXIMUS-ET. Now +245 JPI (85% Rel.), he moved up from eleventh to No. 4 in the breed. In spite of the genetic base change, he has climbed to +116F +517 NM$ +574 CM$ and is the top sire in the breed for all three traits. MAXIMUS is out of the renowned component producer, Tenn Haug E Maid (EX-93).

7BS750 Hilltop Acres En DYNASTY ET once again dominates the breed with his first-place ranking for production at +1,579M (85% Rel.-M) and his second-place ranking for type at +0.9T (74% Rel.-M), culminating a top-10 ranking for Production-Type Index (PTI) at +168M.

Second at Select Sires for milk and first for PTI and NM$, 7BS758 Triangle Acres POLLYDEN ET graduates from the Program for Genetic Advancement™ (PGA™) as a top-10 sire in all yield and profitability traits with PTAs of +1,286M -.02%F +47F +.02%P +48P +334 NM$ +352 CM$ 72% Rel. +187 PTI. He is a R Hart TC DENMARK ET son out of the highly acclaimed Excellent (92), Triangle Acres Coll Polly, a brood-cow extraordinaire with over 40,000 pounds of milk. His daughters are high-producing cows that exhibit dairy strength and depth of body with wide rear udders.

Select's second R Hart Simon ENSIGN ET son to graduate into active-A.I. service at Select Sires, 9BS85 Blessing Garbro LEADER ET, ranks just ahead of his paternal brother, DYNASTY, in the Udder Composite category with a +0.74 UD. He has the unique ability to sire shallow udders that still have the capacity to produce plenty of milk (+957M 74% Rel.), coupled with dairy frames and balance, traits he acquired from his maternal line, anchored by Blessing Sensation Bria (EX-93-3E-EX-MS-ELITE).

No other sire comes close to the profit potential that 9AY78 Visserdale HERMAN adds to the Ayrshire breed. He is the best Ayrshire in the breed for production at +1,332M +43F +305 FM$. In addition, this PGA graduate is among the breed's top trio for protein (+32P), NM$ (+278), CM$ (+263), and PTI (+180). His daughters are the tall, big-framed type with an excellent rear udder and strong cleft. HERMAN comes by all of this naturally, as he is a Hickory-Grove Liberty HAWK-ET son out an Excellent (90) Bonnie Brae HELIGO daughter with production records exceeding 26,000 pounds of milk.
