The World's source for Bovine Genetics
Select Sires' Jersey Sampling
Philosophy Proves Successful

PLAIN CITY, Ohio, March 15, 2005 — Select Sires activated two more Jersey sires in February 2005, bringing its total marketing lineup to 20 proven sires. All but a select few are graduates of the Program for Genetic Advancement™ (PGA™), a national sire-sampling system that has contributed to Jersey breed improvement for over three decades.

"Select Sires has kept pace with the growth in the Jersey cattle population and the personal preferences of individual Jersey breeders by listening to our customers' needs and, in turn, sampling more bulls than any other organization," says Jeff Ziegler, manager of protein/specialty sire programs, Select Sires. "Randomly sampling young sires allows cooperating herd owners early use of the industry's best genetics. And, it ultimately lets Select Sires sell the most highly-reliable proven product. The diversity of pedigrees, the high-yielding components, the profitable health traits, and the sound type that the PGA generates puts us in the enviable position of best servicing the entire Jersey market."

Top LEMVIG Sons Among Select's JPI Standouts

Select Sires dominates the Top 20 Jersey Performance Indexes™ (JPI™) with nine proven sires that are at or higher than +177. Select's top two and three of the nine are sired by ISDK Fyn LEMVIG, a components specialist and unique gene pool from Denmark that Select Sires introduced in the domestic market several years ago.

One of two LEMVIG sons released by Select Sires in February, 7JE622 Ferreira Lemvig PIRANHA-ET is the No. 2 proven sire with a +249 JPI. He is among the breed's best 10 sires for both fat and protein yield plus all three profitability values with Predicted Transmitting Abilities (PTA) of +910M +.24%F +87F +.07%P +46P +438 Net Merit Dollars (NM$) +473 Cheese Merit Dollars (CM$) +372 Fluid Merit Dollars (FM$) and a low 2.85 Somatic Cell Score (SCS). PIRANHA is the industry's highest reliability LEMVIG son with 97 daughters in 49 herds, resulting in an 86% Rel. on his second summary. The grandam of PIRANHA is Golden MBSB of Twin Haven-ET (EX-94), the famous record holder for fat production.

The breed's highest yielding LEMVIG son for PTA Fat is the November PGA graduate 7JE620 Sunset Canyon MAXIMUS-ET. Now +245 JPI (85% Rel.), he moved up from eleventh to No. 4 in the breed. He also has climbed to +116F +517 NM$ +574 CM$ and is the top sire for all three traits. MAXIMUS is out of Tenn Haug E Maid (EX-93), the highly-touted components cow and next dam is a 7.0%F and 4.6%P ISDK Fyn INDEX daughter. This is the same cow family that produced 7JE605 Sunset Canyon MECCA-ET, an August 2004 graduate and components specialist that is also in the top 20 at +179 JPI (86% Rel.). Both are outcross sires with MAXIMUS at a 3.8 Expected Future Inbreeding (EFI) index and MECCA at 5.1 EFI.

Duplicating the same high solids along with a low 5.5 EFI and a +183 JPI (15th in breed) is Select's other February release, 7JE617 Lemvig RUDY. With high PTA values of +.24%F +60F +.10%P +30P +314 NM$ +351 CM$ (82% Rel.) and a low 2.91 SCS, RUDY spells profit for today's Jersey producers. His dam is a 7JE254 Mason Boomer Sooner BERRETTA with 1,800F that is out of two Excellent (91) dams, with over 1,000F. Unlike most LEMVIG bloodlines, RUDY generates positive Standard Transmitting Ability (STA) values of 1.2 Stature, 1.3 Strength, and 1.0 Rump Width.

Rounding out the 11 active-A.I. sires that are higher than +200 JPI is a pair of Rock Maple Brook MONTANA sons that balance high production with positive type. At +209 JPI, 7JE563 Sil-Mist RMBM Buttons BRAZO-ET is one of the top five milk specialists, offering these breed-leading PTA figures: +1,376M +47F +43P +346 NM$ +349 CM$ +339 FM$ (85% Rel.) +1.7T (73% Rel.). Also above the +200 JPI threshold at +207 JPI is 7JE535 Windy Willow Montana JACE with genetic values of +930M +55F +36P +398 NM$ +413 CM$ +370 FM$ (93% Rel.) +1.5T (85% Rel.). These two PGA graduates are among 10 type specialists at Select Sires that are at or higher than +1.5 PTAT. That is almost half of the 23 sires in the breed at this level.

Select Jerseys among Breed's Best for PTA Type

Only nine proven Jerseys are at or higher than +2.0 PTAT and four are in the Select Sires active-A.I. lineup. Ranking second at +2.3T is 7JE510 GOLDEN Boy of Ferreira (93% Rel.) and tied for third at +2.1 is 7JE696 BW LEGION (75% Rel.). Next are two more JPI leaders, 7JE590 Forest Glen Avery ACTION-ET, at +2.0T +177 JPI (72% Rel.) and 9JE202 O.F. Barber ROCKET, also at +2.0T +194 JPI (77% Rel.). Each is a SUPERIOR SETTLER™.
