The World's source for Bovine Genetics
Five Calving-Ease Specialists
Graduate into Select Sires Lineup

PLAIN CITY, Ohio, May 10, 2005 — On May 9 Select Sires added five new proven calving-ease sires to its Holstein marketing lineup. Each new release graduated from the Program for Genetic Advancement™ (PGA™) sire sampling system and has entered active-A.I. with a service-sire calving-ease value of only 7 percent difficult births in heifers (DBH).

"Calving-ease data is one of the key breeding tools a producer can use to generate added-profit potential on his dairy operation," says Chuck Sattler, Vice President-Genetic Programs, Select Sires. "By breeding virgin heifers to highly-proven calving-ease sires like these five new releases, a producer can benefit from alleviating some calving stress in his heifers and from the production and type improvement offered by top A.I. sires."

All Among Breed’s Best for TPI

Select Sires’ top new calving-ease sire, 7HO7011 Pasen MARSH-ET*TV, is among the best Type-Production Index (TPI™) sires in the Holstein breed at +1729 TPI. With a +2.36 Udder Composite (UD) and a +2.19 Feet-and-Legs Composite (FL), this Dixie-Lee AARON son is one of the few bulls in the breed that are higher than +2.00 for both composite scores. Backed by three generations of Excellent dams with records up to 42,260 pounds of milk, MARSH balances a high Predicted Transmitting Ability (PTA) for Type of +1.97 (78% Rel.) with yield PTA values of +1,251M +.01%F +49F -.01%P +35P (84% Rel.). This SUPERIOR SETTLER™ and Herdlife Builder™ fits all milk markets with high indexes of +431 Net Merit Dollars (NM$), +426 Cheese Merit Dollars (CM$), and +439 Fluid Merit Dollars (FM$).

The second AARON son to be released by Select Sires, 7HO6959 Ever-Green-View ELCON-ET*TV, also transmits the type (+1.38T), udders (+1.40UD) and mobility (+1.97FL), that made his sire popular among registered breeders. Couple that with a solid +1,076M and +50P (among Select’s top 10) and three generations of Excellent dams, each exceeding 48,000 pounds of milk, 1,700 pounds of fat, and 1,300 pounds of protein. The result is a Herdlife BuilderTM with a +1590 TPI that fits many heifer A.I. programs.

7HO6953 Sure-View ALEX-ET*CV is destined to be a popular new proven bull on Holstein’s Top 100 TPI sire list. This Wa-Del CONVINCER son is one of the most-consistent sires across all type traits at +2.14T +1.68UD +1.62FL +1.76 Body Composite (BD) +2.32 Dairy Composite (D) at 84% Rel. He has the unusual distinction of siring offspring with tall, dairy frames, and great strength and depth, while also earning a low 7 percent calving-ease score. At +1,490M (86% Rel.), ALEX ranks among Select Sires’ top 15 for milk. This production potential comes from his 7HO3948 MJR Blackstar EMORY dam, a Very Good Dam of Merit that made 47,940M 1,698F 1,480P as a five-year-old.

Offering a rather-unique pedigree, 7HO6838 Barbi-Lyn M MATCHES-ET*TV transmits the profitable management traits that made his sire, Carol Prelude MTOTO, popular among producers and the production that his maternal grandsire, 7HO3847 Ameldin II Pontiac HUNTER, was known for. This +1,340M calving-ease specialist ranks among the top 15 at Select Sires for all three health traits with a low Somatic Cell Score at 2.63 SCS, a high Productive Life at +2.1PL, and a high Daughter Pregnancy Rate at +1.0DPR. This SUPERIOR SETTLER also is No. 4 among all Select sires with a +448 NM$. It all adds up to a +1628 TPI.

Touting a +1675 TPI, 7HO6957 Jeffrey-Way TOURNAME-ET*CV is the highest TPI 7HO5157 Regancrest Elton DURHAM son sampled in the U.S. in the May 2005 sire summary. On the bottom side of this “Select” pedigree are two Excellent dams…a 94-point 7HO3847 HUNTER daughter with 50,000 pounds of milk and a 91-point daughter of 7HO980 Walkway Chief MARK with over 38,000 pounds of milk. Solid PTAs of +898M +.05%P +41P (79% Rel.) +1.80T +1.27UD +1.56FL +1.17BD +1.28D (74% Rel.) and sound dollar values of +389 NM$ +415 CM$ +340 FM$ make this calving-ease sire a logical choice for heifer mating programs.
