Select Sires Shows Leadership
in High-Components Breeds

PLAIN CITY, Ohio, Aug. 17, 2005 — Coinciding with the USDA quarterly release of genetic evaluations on August 8, Select Sires has released its updated 33-sire high-component breeds lineup and it includes genetic trait leaders in each breed.

"The ongoing success that we experience in these breeds is primarily the result of the Program for Genetic Advancement™ (PGA™) young sire program," says Chuck Sattler, vice president Genetic Programs, Select Sires. "Through the participation of PGA cooperator herds, we are constantly developing top-proven sires across all dairy breeds. If you are not participating in PGA, now is an excellent time to join. Participants benefit from having the first progeny from elite proven sires, and receive the financial rewards of PGA certificates. In addition, accurate information has never been more important in managing a successful dairy operation and participating in progeny test programs assures reliable genetic information on the bulls you use."

Another valuable component of a large-sampling program is the opportunity to sample a wide variety of bulls. "Increased participation in PGA will allow Select Sires to consider bulls with more pedigree diversity, select bulls based on health and fertility traits, and devote more attention to the growing demand for high-type sires," says Sattler.

The top-two Select sires for JPI also are the only two ISDK Fyn LEMVIG sons in the breed at 90% Reliability. November PGA graduate 7JE620 Sunset Canyon MAXIMUS-ET is No. 4 in the breed at +203JPI (84% Rel.). This SUPERIOR SETTLER™ is the breed’s top sire at +.17%P +.51%F +104F (92% Rel.) and +527 Cheese Merit Dollars (CM$), plus one of the best 10 for protein yield (+39P), Net Merit Dollars (+467 NM$), and Fluid Merit Dollars (+355 FM$).

Jersey Herdlife Builders

The recent success and acceptance of the Herdlife Builder™ designation to differentiate bulls that add type traits to increase a cow’s longevity has been remarkable. Select Sires has trademarked this concept and now expands its use to the Jersey program. This practical approach to breeding for longevity includes only the top-50 percent of active-A.I. sires for Functional Udder Index, only the top-50 percent of active-A.I. sires for Foot Angle, and excludes the highest-20 percent of active-A.I. sires for Dairy Form, which has a negative correlation to longevity.

The Herdlife Builder designation is in support of Dr. Kent Weigel’s University of Wisconsin research of type traits that lead toward longevity. The following were designated Herdlife Builders with the August summary: 7JE442 PARAMOUNT, 7JE510 GOLDEN, 7JE535 JACE, 7JE559 FORMAL, 7JE605 MECCA, 7JE696 LEGION, and 9JE202 ROCKET.

Breed’s Top Two Brown Swiss for Milk

A mainstay at the top of the breed, 7BS750 Hilltop Acres En DYNASTY ET*TM ranks No. 1 for both milk (+1,572M, 87% Rel.-M) and type (+0.9T, 76% Rel.-M). A popular flush sire, this PGA graduate also is among the top-10 Brown Swiss sires at +42F +44P +337FM$ +172 Production-Type Index (PTI-M).

7BS758 Triangle Acres POLLYDEN ET holds the No. 2 position on the milk, protein, and PTI lists. Released from the PGA in February 2005, he has climbed in all traits in both May and August, now with PTAs of +1,470M -.01%F +58F +.03%P +55P +398 NM$ +419 CM$ 75% Rel. +0.4T +217PTI 72% Rel. He is the highest-ranking son of the highly acclaimed Triangle Acres Coll Polly (EX-92).

New Guernsey Sire Stands Out

7GU381 Lang Haven Luxury NEON has landed the No. 5 spot in the Guernsey breed at +162PTI +1.4T (59% Rel.) +1,393M (62% Rel.) on his release summary. He also is the second-high sire at +323NM$ and +360FM$ and among the top six for components (+37F +31P). He first gained attention two years ago as the sire of an All-American senior calf that sold for $7,000. His daughters are tall, dairy cows with adequate strength and outstanding rear udders. This is of no surprise, as he is a son of 7GU339 Trotacre Jay Mr LUXURY from two generations of Excellent dams at Lang Haven, a prefix that has emerged at the top of the CPI list.

Once again 7GU366 Trotacre Enhancer LEWIS-ET is the predominant sire in the breed with his breed-leading +191PTI +1.8T (81% Rel.) +356NM$ +$337CM$ +390FM$ . And he is No. 2 for production at +1,468M (84% Rel.).

Fourth in the breed at +167PTI (83% Rel.) is 7GU379 My Day Bliss BANGER-ET. He, too, is a prominent genetic force for both milk and type, ranking in the top 10 for each of the following: +1,314M +36P +255NM$ +249CM$ +267FM$ (85% Rel.) +1.4T.

Top New Milking Shorthorn

7MS341 Bar-D-Kuszmar CLAY debuted as a promising new Milking Shorthorn sire on the May 2005 sire summary. In August, this PGA release climbed 135 pounds to +466 PTAM (67% Rel.) and is the No. 1 sire at +.08% Fat and +30F. This summary he received his first official type summary and is the second-highest ranking sire at +.01T (49% Rel.). His daughters are impressing breeders with their great dairy frames; both as All-American nominees and high-dollar progeny in the sale ring.
