Carson is Select Sires’
SMS Evaluator of the Year

PLAIN CITY, Ohio, Nov. 4, 2005 — Gayle Carson of Gray, Tenn., is Select Sires’ 2005 Select Mating Service™ (SMS™) Evaluator of the Year.

The honor was bestowed in September during Select Sires’ national sales conference in Columbus, Ohio. Fellow evaluators, technicians and sales and management staff from across the nation witnessed the presentation.

The award is given annually to an individual who has shown dedication to the SMS program through years of superior service, building and maintaining successful relationships with dairy producers and a history of high-quality evaluations.

"It’s always a pleasure to give this award to an evaluator who has really earned respect from customers and goes above and beyond normal responsibilities. Gayle is that person every day," said Lon Peters, vice president dairy sire products services, Select Sires.

Carson began his career with East Tennessee Select Sires in 1977 in route sales, coming from a background in field work for the Holstein Association in Pennsylvania. Through his years at Select, he’s also worked in sales management, field work and later with SMS and the Program for Genetic Advancement™ (PGA™), Select’s young sire program.

In 2004, he mated 84,892 cows and heifers on dairies in Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee and Kansas.

Carson is known for his keen eye and appreciation for good cows that have helped many producers develop productive herds, according to Southeast Select Sires general manager Tim Riley.

"He has been so successful in working with his customers that many of them consider him as part of their operation and look forward to seeing him each time he comes to the farm. They are anxious to show him the results of his work and glean from him anything they can about bull daughters he has seen," Riley said.

Carson’s cow sense also shines through as he excels in reading registered cow pedigrees at auctions nationwide.

Carson’s family includes his wife, Teresa, and children Chasta and Matt.

Since 1973, Select Mating Service has provided dairy producers with a labor-saving, user-friendly approach to mating programs. Professional SMS evaluators work with herd managers to understand breeding objectives, evaluate each animal individually, and use research and computerized analysis to develop matings. In 2004, SMS evaluators made more than 3.7 million mating recommendations as a value-added service for thousands of herd owners.
