Six of Select’s Sires Take Gold Medal Honors



PLAIN CITY, Ohio, Aug. 29, 2006 — The Holstein Association USA Inc., Brattleboro, Vt., recently awarded the Gold Medal Sire designation to six bulls in Select’s lineup based on their outstanding merits.

The Gold Medal Sire designation is given in recognition of superior type and production of their officially tested and classified offspring. To qualify, bulls must exceed a specified level for Type-Production Index™ (TPI™), have a minimum reliability of 90 percent for their Predicted Transmitting Ability (PTA) for Fat and for Type and they must be free of any recognized undesirable genetic defect.

Calving Ease Specialists Make the List

Second-crop successes, 7HO6417 O-Bee MANfred Justice-ET and 7HO6168 Bay-Bob AMATEUR-ET, easily made the list touting high marks for TPI and Calving Ease. Customer satisfaction sire, O MAN, has maintained an outstanding TPI score with the addition of second-crop daughters, ranking second in the breed for TPI (+1947 92% Rel.). He is a calving-ease specialist at 3% (99% Rel.) and tops the breed for Net Merit Dollars at +$710 (94% Rel.), in addition to carrying the Superior Settler™ label. AMATEUR also carries the Calving Ease designation (7% CE 99% Rel.) while scoring high for TPI at +1695 (91% Rel.). He is dubbed a Herdlife Builder™ with a Productive Life score of +2.9 (76% Rel.) and also makes Select’s Top-5 for Daughter Pregnancy Rate at +2.0 (82% Rel.). Combine AMATEUR’s positive health traits with Udder and Feet and Leg Composites over a point (+1.02 UDC +1.67 FLC) and you have the perfect combination for a commercial environment.

High-Ranking TPI Sire, ARTIC, Gets the Nod

7HO7334 Canyon-Breeze HRL ARTIC-ET is a high-ranking TPI sire father. ARTIC is positioned among the Top-5 in Select’s lineup for TPI at +1768 (91% Rel.) and is a top milk and protein producer (+1,759 M +50 P 95% Rel.). Ranking at +$405 Net Merit Dollars (86% Rel.), ARTIC is an udder improver (+1.50 UDC) specializing in Rear Udder Width (+3.46) and Height (+3.00). With all composites at +1.50 or higher (+1.65 FLC +1.78 BD +1.55 D) and high PTA Milk, ARTIC offers the complete genetic package that today’s dairy producers are seeking.

Three more outstanding bulls round out Select’s list of Gold Medal sires. 7HO7383 Windsor-Manor Durham ZEUS, another udder improver (+2.05 UDC 90% Rel.), stands with a highly respectable Type score of +1.78. 7HO7183 Far-O-La Mar SABLE Shawn-ET, a 7HO5375 Mara-Thon BW MARSHALL-ET son, is designated a Herdlife Builder and Calving Ease sire (7% CE 87% Rel.) with +1.91 UDC (92% Rel.). Another BW MARSHALL son, 7HO7466 Robthom MOSCOW-ET, boasts outstanding type traits (+1.57 Type +1.92 FLC +1.75 UDC 90% Rel.) and designations as a Superior Settler and Calving Ease sire (7% CE 87% Rel.), now with gender SELECTed™ semen available.
