SELECTIONS - Fall 2001
EMORY SONS Superior Genetics For Diverse Needs
A superior customer-satisfaction sire in his own right,
7HO3948 MJR Blackstar EMORY-ET now has 13 sons in Select’s
active lineup - the most in the industry. And, with 11 different
maternal grandsires, they are a diverse group equipped to meet
virtually any producer’s needs.
Ever since the first EMORY sons entered active-A.I. service last year,
they have gained recognition for consistently siring production from
strength - just like dad. As producers become more familiar with these
recent graduates, they’re finding breed leaders for type and milk, superior
udder and foot-and-leg improvers, calving-ease sires and even sires that
can boost components.
LEADING THE BREED
In August, two EMORY sons sorted themselves to the top and now are found on
the mating lists of serious Holstein breeders everywhere.
Leading the Select Sires lineup for milk production with +2,740 PTAM is
7HO5708 Fustead Emory BLITZ-ET. One of only four sires in the breed to
exceed +2,000 PTAM and +2.00 for type (+2.46 PTAT), BLITZ has an Udder Composite
of +2.28 and the breed’s second-highest standard transmitting ability for rear-udder
width (+4.10).
7HO6352 Four-Of-A Kind ELAND-ET is one of just five Select sires with values
greater than +2.00 for all linear type composites. The breed’s highest sire
for PTAT at +3.38, ELAND also transmits improved fat production (+.03% +43F)
and respectable milk production (+968M).
GENETICS TO MEET DIVERSE NEEDS
EMORY has one of the most phenomenal graduation rates of any sire of sons at
Select, with half of his sons proven through the Program for Genetic Advancement™
(PGA™) entering active service. Just 1 1/2 years after his first son graduated,
these statistics highlight the diverse genetic offering:
- Seven higher than +2.00 PTAT (7HO5687 FORBIDDEN, BLITZ, ELAND,
7HO5653 DERRY, 7HO5742 HILLCREST and 7HO5581 EQUITY)
- Three greater than +2,000 PTAM - BLITZ, 7HO5630 CALVIN*CV and
7HO5615 EMORY KEN
- Eight with +2.00 or more for Udder Composite - FORBIDDEN, BLITZ, ELAND,
7HO5653 BRASS, 7HO5592 LOUIE, 9HO2344 COOPER, DERRY and EQUITY
Although EMORY himself is not a components-improver or calving-ease sire, two
sons have plus PTAs for fat and protein percents (FORBIDDEN and 9HO2393 SHAWNEE*CV).
BRASS, 7HO5596 GEMSTONE, COOPER and SHAWNEE have 8 percent difficult births or l
ess. As a bonus, FORBIDDEN, BRASS, COOPER, HILLCREST and SHAWNEE are SUPERIOR SETTLERs™.
"Better yet, there are still several more EMORY sons in the pipeline," says
Blaine Crosser, vice president, dairy sire product line. "Breeders are gaining
a merchandising edge by using EMORY sons early. At the same time, producers looking for production from strength will be pleased with what this diverse group of sires can do to improve their herds’ genetics."
