SELECTIONS - Winter 2002
BULLetin BOARD
MOE Tested Free of CVM
In December, 7HO5442 Muranda Mandel MOE-ET*TV was declared
free of the genetic recessive Complex Vertebral Malformation (CVM).
This gene-based test result supersedes an earlier result that declared
MOE a carrier. Select Sires worked closely with the laboratory to
understand the varied test results. An in-depth investigatin identified
that the original sample somehow had been contaminated. Select Sires
continues to have confidence in the accuracy of the gene-based diagnostic
test for CVM.
SMS Helps Manage Recessives
The key to controlling genetic recessives, including CVM, is to avoid
carrier-to-carrier matings. Select Mating Service, a value-added service
available to customers, is a convenient tool to help avoid CVM and other
genetic conditions that can come from high levels of inbreeding. That’s
one of the reasons why the highly trained SMS professionals continue to
evaluate and mate more animals than any other organization. In North
America alone SMS provided more than 2.3 million mating recommendations in 2001.
