PATRON Dies at 11 Years of Age

9HO1729 Brabant Star PATRON-ET*TV, Excellent (92), Gold Medal, died on June 15. With more than 20,000 daughters in his production summary and more than 11,000 classified daughters, PATRON had May proof credentials that describe his ability to improve milk components while transmitting extraordinary udders (+2.15 UDC). He was used as a sire of sons, with 9HO2448 Art-Acres Patron SPOCK-ET*TV graduating into active-A.I. service in November 2001 and other sons awaiting graduation. A limited supply of PATRON semen is available from Select Sires.

Two DURHAMs Sell for $50,000

Markwell Durham Daisy, Very Good (87) with an Excellent mammary, topped the International Revue Sale at $52,000 on May 4 in Lynden, Wash. This 7HO5157 Regancrest Elton DURHAM-ET*CV daughter consigned by Markwell Holsteins, Lynden, Wash. was purchased by Sun-Valley Dairy, Neillsville, Wis. Indianhead Renaissance, another DURHAM daughter, was the second-high seller at the Indianhead Milking Herd and Select Heifer Sale on May 11 in Barron, Wis. Owners Bob and Karyn Shauf consigned the springing heifer, which went for $50,000 to a syndicate of breeders from Georgia, Kansas and Wisconsin.

EMERSON and HI METRO Now High "Excellent"

In April, a committee of classifiers from Holstein Association USA, Brattleboro, Vt., completed an in-person evaluation of 7HO6250 Ricecrest EMERSON-ET*BL,TV and 7HO5841 Sikkema-Star-W HI METRO-ET*CV, and raised their final scores to Excellent (96) and Excellent (95), respectively. Before EMERSON was Excellent (95) and HI METRO was Excellent (93).

Select Jerseys Sires of Sons

Nearly 25 percent of the top Jersey "sires of sons" are Select Sires bulls. And, 499 of the 1,596 Jersey bulls registered in 2001 were sired by Select bulls. Four Select sires were among the top eight sires of sons. They are 7JE424 Molly Brook Glnwood FREEDOM-ET, 145 sons; 7JE290 WF/L&M Duncan BARBER-ET, 75 sons; 7JE442 Rock Ella PARAMOUNT-ET, 66 sons; and 7JE399 Al-Top All AMERICAN, 64 sons.

Two All-Americans Now EX-95

Co-Vista Airliner Sarah, the 2001 reserve All-American 4-year-old, sired by 7HO3938 Ellbank AIRLINER-ET*TV, and owned by Elmvue Farm, Millerton, N.Y., and Rottinghaus Holsteins, Kansas, recently was classified Excellent (95) with a 98-point mammary system. Gaige Highlight Tamara is now Excellent (95). By 7HO3257 HIGHLIGHT Mr Mark Cinder*CV, she was the 1999 reserve All-American senior 2-year-old, and is owned by the David and Donna Gaige family, Schoharie, N.Y.

Distributors Honored at Latin American Sales Conference

Thirty-two distributors representing 18 countries gathered in Columbus, Ohio, for the Select Sires Latin American distributors conference. The distributors recognized for market growth were Roberto Castañeda and Ricardo Diaz, El Salvador (small-markets category and overall winner), and Sembra and Semeia, Brazil (large-markets category). A special presentation was made to Jerry Fickel for his more than 20 years of work for Select Sires in Latin America.

TRADER Daughter Second Jersey to Produce Ton of Fat

Hillview Trader Babka, bred and owned by Sorenson Hillview Jersey Farm Inc., Pine River, Wis., has completed the second 2,000-pound fat record in Jersey history. A daughter of 7JE252 Avon Road TRADER, she produced 6-0 365d 32,598M 6.4% 2,100F 3.6% 1,180P.

Class-Leading LORAL Daughter

A 7GU322 Trotacre Mercury LORAL-ET daughter leads the national list of junior 2-year-olds for milk, fat and protein. OCS Dairy Taylor Maid (EX-90), owned by OCS Dairy, Jefferson, Md., produced 2-5 305d 30,540M 1,337F 939P.

SOVEREIGN-RED Daughter EX-92

Ruann TSS Charity, owned by Ruann Dairy, Riverdale, Calif., recently was scored Excellent (92). This daughter of 7HO5412 Tri-Sec-SS SOVEREIGN-RED-ET*TV has 2-3 365d 33,220M 3.5% 1,178F 3.1% 1,025P.

PGA Daughter Thriving

McClelland Luck No. 5149-Grade


The Program for Genetic Advancement™ (PGA™) continues to lead the industry, with 4,658 herds representing more than 1.02 million cows participating. These herds help sample more than 350 sires of five dairy breeds each year. McClelland Luck No. 5149-Grade, sired by 7HO5862 Liberty-Inc Duster LUCK-ET*TV, is a PGA result, and is pictured with owners (from left), Jana, Robert, Dora and George McClelland of Petaluma, Calif.

MARSHALL Daughter Tops Sale

A September 2001 7HO5375 Mara-Thon BW MARSHALL-ET*TV daughter sold for $9,000 in the Wisconsin Holstein Spring Special. Kellercrest Holsteins, Mt. Horeb, Wis., purchased this consignment from Honeycrest Farms Inc., Spring Valley, Wis.

BERRETTA Daughter No. 1 for PTI

LJF2 SB Berretta Haley, a 7JE254 Mason Boomer Sooner Berretta daughter, has topped the Jersey PTI list for the 10th time. She was the high-selling animal in the Barmore Jerseys Complete Dispersal, Smithfield, Ky., last November, selling for $36,000 to H.E. Heindel & Sons, Brogue, Pa.

Select Family Tradition

Brigeen Emory Raisa-ET, a 7HO3948 MJR Blackstar EMORY*TV daughter of Brigeen-C Integrit Robin-ET - the highest-scored daughter of INTEGRITY - is now Very Good (88), EX-MS as a 2-year-old. Owned by Brigeen Farms, Turner, Maine, Raisa is under contract by Select. Steve Keene and Duane Conant, Auburn and Canton, Maine, consigned the choice of Robin’s flush to 7HO8419 Mr Jed APPROVAL-ET*TV to the Camelot Kind Sale, Greenfield, Mass., which went to Todd Whittier, Sutton, Mass. for $11,500. Doug Nelson, Vermont, purchased the choice of Robin’s ENCORE flush at the Atlantic Stars of Spring Sale, Prince Edward Island, for $13,700 (CDN).

GENO Daughter Second For Fat

Be-Ware Geno June, a 7HO5435 Be-Ware Juror GENO*TV daughter, ranks second for fat in Ohio among junior 3-year-olds. She has 3-5 365d 36,340M 4.8% 1,744F 2.9% 1,050P, and is owned by Walter Berg, Bellville, Ohio.

CHIME 2-Year-Old Very Good (86)

Chime Tessina, a second-crop daughter of 7BS715 Rolling View Jetway CHIME ET, recently scored Very Good (86) at 2 years, 3 months of age. She is owned by Horseshoe Hill Swiss, Watertown, Wis.

LINK Daughter Excels

A 7HO5760 Le-Bert Aerostar LINK*TV daughter, JC-Gross Aerolink Madn Viva, now is Excellent (90) and has 2-4 352d 35,400M 1,387F 1,092P. She is owned by John C. Gross, Madison, S.D.
