SMS Celebrates 30 Years

In 1973, Select Sires introduced the Select Mating ServiceTM (SMSTM). Its primary goal was to help dairy producers develop herds that had the correct type and high production genetics they wanted. Driven by the needs and desires of individual customers rather than offering a pre-established routine, it evaluated 5,800 cows in its first year of operation.

This year marks the 30th anniversary of SMS. The program has grown to more than 3 million corrective matings annually. Used in more than 36 countries, SMS has become the most widely accepted mating system in the world.

The mating program has evolved to keep up-to-date with current research on which type traits can improve productive life. Remo Wicki With Cows

Remo Wicki, a Select Sires Canada sales representative and SMS evaluator, practices evaluating cows duing the May SMS conference. Professional SMS evaluators help lighten your management load by understanding your specific breeding goals, then providing the research and analysis you need to reach them. SMS evaluators collectively have more than 580 years of experience mating cows, and use computer technology and good old-fashioned cow sense to get your herd where you want it to be genetically.
