Select Employee Celebrates 50 Years

On May 25, 2003, Carol Garnett, Select Sires semen services manager, became the seventh recipient of the National Association of Animal Breeders (NAAB) half-century award, recognizing 50 years of service in the industry.

Carol Garnett, Second From Left From hand-cranked registers to computers, Carol Garnett, second from left, has seen it all in her 50-years-and-going career with Select. Garnett began her career with Select Sires before it was an official organization, landing a job with COBA/Select Sires in 1953 processing and shipping semen. When the Select Sires cooperative was formed in 1965, she transferred to the new company.

A time when technology quickly was evolving in artificial insemination, Garnett remembers shipping semen everyday in liquid form, then freezing semen in glass ampules, and now freezing in straws.

"In the beginning there were just a few of us and we did everything. I helped freeze a lot of semen early on, but once we went to straws I was too busy doing shipping to help freeze," recalls Garnett. "The biggest change has been how we package our product and our ability to ship everything is a lot easier than it used to be."

Blaine Crosser, vice president, dairy-sire product line and customer service, Garnett’ssupervisor, estimates that she has processed orders to ship more than 100 million straws of semen.

In honor of her milestone, Select Sires hosted Carol Garnett day on May 30. Select employees, representatives from member cooperatives and many of Garnett’s friends and family gathered to reminisce and celebrate her career, which is still going strong.
