Changes in Select's Sire Department
Ron Long Retires
After 30 years of dedicated service to Select Sires, Ron Long, vice president, dairy sire procurement, retired on Dec. 31, 2003. Long began his career with Select Sires in 1973, and under the direction of Dick Chichester, retired general manager of Select Sires and John Hecker, worked in the sire department to establish a herd-consultation service to serve the needs of large-herd owners. This program, Select Mating Service™ (SMS™), has since evolved into the largest mating program in the world, conducting more than 3 million matings a year.
In addition to his accomplishments with Select Sires, Long has been an industry leader, serving as president of National Dairy Shrine, on the NAAB Standardization of Type Traits committee, the Ohio State University Dairy Science Advisory committee and is a national and international judge. He was also elected into the Ohio State University Dairy Science Department Hall of Fame.
Chuck Sattler
Chuck Sattler has been appointed to succeed Long as vice president of genetic programs. Sattler has a keen understanding of progeny test and research coupled with an understanding and appreciation of Select’s superior sire-selection programs. Since he came to Select in 2000, Sattler has been Select Sires’ technical person on research issues. He consolidated the PGATM program with Sire Power’s GOLD program and has worked to improve the efficiency of the PGA program through electronic records.
Sattler will be responsible for leading, managing and developing the sire department in the areas of administration, genetic research programs and the industry-leading Program for Genetic Advancement™.
Charlie Will
Charlie Will has been promoted to a newly created position of manager of Holstein sire selection. Will has a proven track record of over 20 years experience as a sire analyst, acquiring such great bulls as 7HO1897 To-Mar BLACKSTAR-ET, 7HO3948 MJR Blackstar EMORY-ET*TV, 7HO2236 Emprise Bell ELTON*CV, 7HO5375 Mara-Thon BW MARSHALL-ET*TV, 7HO5157 Regancrest Elton DURHAM-ET*CV, 7HO6349 Hidden-View BEST*TV, and 7HO6417 O-Bee MANfred Justice-ET*TV.
Will will be responsible for the management, leadership and development of Select’s industry-leading Holstein-sire programs.
Jeff Ziegler
Jeff Zeigler has been promoted to manager of protein/specialty sire programs. Jeff is one of the most highly respected people in the Jersey industry, and through his leadership has guided Select to a dominant position in the breed.
Ziegler will be responsible for investigating and developing new genetic programs that will enhance Select’s sire programs.
