"Train the Trainer" Benefits Customers

Our goal with the SRS program is to continually elevate the reproductive expertise of every person on the Select Sires service line. In order to do this, Select Sires hosts a number of training sessions each year. The most recent was a "Train the Trainer" conference which was held in June near Greensboro, N.C. The objective of the three-day event was to teach 30-key SRS Specialists more about herd-record analysis and reproductive troubleshooting. The agenda included Dr. Greg Bethard of G & R Consulting on “How to Identify Nutritional Challenges to Reproductive Performance”; Dr. Tom Bailey, Monsanto Dairy Business, on "The Role that Cow Comfort Plays in Achieving Good Reproductive Performance"; and Dr. Roger Saltman, senior veterinarian, Pfizer Animal Health, on "How to Identify Infectious Challenges to Reproductive Performance".

Lyle Kruse, Minnesota/Select Sires (L) and Rob Hamaker, Agrarian Marketing Corporation, (R) participate in the on-farm reproductive analysis at Dwayne Myers Dairy, Jonesville, N.C.

After a day of classroom training, the SRS specialists divided into groups and each group conducted a reproductive analysis of the cows at the Dwayne Myers Dairy. The third day Dr. Nebel assisted the groups in analyzing their findings and developing presentations to report their recommendations to the dairy’s management team.

The SRS specialists participating in the symposium returned to their respective member cooperatives and are now training other personnel on their teams. Working together with management on each farm, these SRS teams will play vital roles in the future productivity and profitability of dairies in their service areas.
