Frequently Asked Questions about Internships1. What are the basic responsibilities and requirements of Select Sires interns?
Select Sires is committed to providing students with internships that will not only give them a summer job, but will also help them develop a portfolio and resume as they enter the working world. Successful candidates will be those who are majoring in animal science, dairy science, agricultural economics, agricultural communications or a related field. Though specific requirements are listed below, computer skills (word processing, spreadsheets) are essential for all Select internships. Additional responsibilities may be assigned as the supervisor feels appropriate.
2. How long do the internships last?
Select Sires summer internships are approximately 12 weeks long, with start and end dates flexible with the student's school schedule.
3. How do I apply, and what are the deadlines?
There is not a formal application form for any of the Select Sires internships. Instead, candidates must submit a cover letter, resume and references. Materials for the dairy communications and dairy-sire internships are due no later than January 1, of the internship year.
Students are encouraged to e-mail materials to the following contacts:
Corporate communications - Terri Smith, email@example.com
Dairy-sire marketing - Marc Bolen, firstname.lastname@example.org
Applications also may be mailed to the appropriate person at 11740 US Hwy 42N, Plain City, OH, 43064.
4. Can I apply for more than one internship?
Yes, but please indicate in your cover letter the internships for which you are applying.
5. How many hours a week will I work?
Summer interns are considered temporary full-time employees, which typically means 40 hours per week. On limited occasions where extra hours may be required, the supervisor will work out details with the intern.
6. What if I need time off?
Select understands that college is a busy time, and therefore generally will allow one week (without pay). As with any job, prior approval from the supervisor is required.
7. How are summer interns paid?
Summer interns are paid via direct deposit on a biweekly basis. Select offers competitive compensation to interns, with details discussed when an internship offer is extended.
8. Is housing provided?
It is the student's responsibility to locate and secure appropriate housing. However, we do what we can to help locate safe, affordable housing. Select Sires has a very good working relationship with The Ohio State University, and can leverage contacts to help find good temporary homes for our interns, either on campus or with agriculture students looking for temporary summer roommates.
