Select Sires Semen Processing and Research Internship
The Select Sires Semen Processing and Research internship is based at the Select Sires headquarters in Plain City, Ohio. The purpose of this internship is to provide science-oriented students with experience in bovine semen processing and freezing, product quality control, and research at the largest bull stud in North America. This position is open to all undergraduate students studying animal/dairy science or a related scientific field. An applicant will preferably be entering their junior or senior year of undergraduate education, but applicants planning on continuing education in a pertinent field (i.e. graduate or professional school) will be considered. Hours worked will vary from 10 to 40 hours per week depending on business operations and the intern’s availability.
Emphasis will be placed on developing general laboratory skills and the utilization of machines to process and analyze bovine sperm. Duties would include, but are not limited to, performing semen quality control evaluations, semen extender preparation, general laboratory maintenance, administrative tasks, and assisting with research projects both in-house and potentially off-site. Ideally, a successful intern would be able to conduct one or more research projects by the end of the internship. Development and execution of an independent research project is a possibility, but not a requirement. Supervision and assistance by laboratory and research staff will contribute to the education and training of the selected intern.
A successful candidate should have an interest in the bovine artificial insemination industry. Candidates with laboratory and research experience are preferred but not required. Personal transportation is required.
