Long entered the A.I. industry in 1973 with Select Sires, and his contributions throughout his 28 years were truly outstanding. When he joined Select as a sire analyst, his first assignment was to initiate a mating service to provide sire selection advice to dairymen in which the genetic traits of the parents would utilize strengths and minimize weaknesses in the resulting offspring. Through his vision and creativity, the program he originated became known as Select Mating Service™ or SMS™. Over the past 30 years, the SMS program has become the largest in the world, mating well over four million cows per year not only in the U.S., but in more than 40 countries. In 1988, Long's ability and experience earned his promotion to chairman of the dairy sire department at Select Sires. In this capacity, he supervised all phases of sire procurement, daughter evaluation and ultimate selection of proven sires. Long has served the industry as President of National Dairy Shrine, NAAB Standardization of Type Traits Committee, Holstein Friesian Association (HFA) Type Advisory Committee, HFA Genetic Index Committee, Ohio State University Dairy Science Advisory Committee and is a national and international dairy cattle judge. Long's successful accomplishments on behalf of the dairy industry were further recognized recently by his induction into The Ohio State University Dairy Science Department Hall of Service.
