Select Sires Launches Reproductive Certification Program

PLAIN CITY, OHIO, USA - To more completely serve their members and customers, Select Sires has initiated a national Reproductive Certification Program. "The objective in designing this program is to further develop our field staff into complete reproductive resources," comments Mel DeJarnette, Select’s Reproduction Specialist. "The days of dropping off semen and leaving a note that you’ll be back in a month are long over. Breeders wear enough hats and it’s our job to shoulder the responsibility of learning the details of cattle reproduction. Offering up-to-date and practical advice that saves time and money while adding to their bottomline - now that’s what producers are looking for," he adds.

Phase I of the certification process requires home study followed by a challenging, written exam. It covers questions related to the basic concepts of reproductive physiology, semen handling, A.I. technique, heat detection, estrus synchronization and reproductive management. The second phase involves in-depth study on practical reproductive management systems of both beef and dairy cattle.

The principles of A.I. and reproduction have changed little over the years, but the methods and systems available for reproductive management have evolved considerably. "Before you can understand a cattle management program, you must first understand the cow. Having a strong grasp of the basics is essential," stresses DeJarnette. "That’s why Phase I is geared toward an intense study of how the cow works by nature. The next step moves into implementation of reproductive management systems: when they should be used, which one to use, how they work and why they sometimes don’t work."

Reproductive consulting has become an increasingly important role of the A.I.averages have increased, reproductive efficiency has trended down. What was previously left up to the experts is now demanded of the salesman on-farm. In preparing sales representatives to fulfill this role, Select Sires demonstrates its dedication to providing America’s Best people, products and service to its beef and dairy producers.
