Breeding The Complete Cow...
It’s Select Sires’ Philosophy

PLAIN CITY, OHIO, USA - "Breeding the complete cow has always been the philosophy of Select Sires," states Ron Long, Vice President of Sire Procurement. "Complete cows are what dairy producers really want and need. But the complete cow may mean different things to different producers - high milk production, good feet and legs, high components, sound udders. They're all important but in varying degrees to each individual producer."

"Select's diversified lineup can be used with the utmost confidence to breed the complete cow, no matter what her definition, explains Long. "We offer reliable, breed leading genetics that can meet the criteria of any producer's breeding program. No other A.I. organization can offer Holstein breeders as many bulls over +3.00 for type. Nor does any other stud offer more elite bulls at +3,000 for milk. Plus, our nine new Holsteins increase the variety of our balanced lineup."

Simply The Best

As Long stated, Select Sires is home to four bulls at or above +3.00 for type, a feat no other stud can match. 7HO5157 Durham leads this elite pack at +3.55. He is followed by 7HO8419 Approval at +3.41 and 7HO5767 Bonanza at +3.05. Anchoring this type team is 7HO6250 Emerson at +3.00. Emerson is also a breed leading TPI sire, ranking among Holstein's Top 10 TPI sires at +1736, a 49 point increase from the November summary.

7HO5253 Caleb and 7HO4637 Winchester have "got milk"! Both are over +3,000 milk and rank among the breed's very best for this trait. Their impressive TPIs of +1553 and +1614, respectively, rank them among Holstein's Top 50 TPI sires.

Good News For Customers

It's very exciting to see a bull's proof go up with additional information generated by second crop daughters. Such is the case with 7HO4351 Barlo, who added 263 daughters iand +1448TPI.

7HO3707 Mathie continues to be a favorite for Select's customers world-wide. This superior settler added over 1,600 new daughters this summary and his milk and type proofs climbed even higher. This was also the case with his two sons, 7HO5386 Chil and 7HO5300 Magnum. Both added daughters and are seeing substantial increases across the board. Chil and Magnum are both over +2,000M, +1493TPI and Superior Settlers. Furthermore, Chil is Select's best for Productive Life (+3.3), a measure of the length of time the average daughter of a bull stays in the herd. Magnum is also among Select's best for this trait while his father, Mathie, ranks third at +3.0. Keeping it all in the family, 7HO4457 Saber, whose grandam is also Mathie's dam, ranks second for Productive Life at +3.2. Saber added nearly 300 to his proof and climbed +136 pounds of milk and +41 TPI points. Needless to say, this family's results speak for themselves.

New On The Scene

One of Select's nine new Holstein sires is 7HO5375 Marshall, a Program for Genetic Advancement (PGA) graduate that is nearly +3,000 for milk at +2,733M. This Bellwood from an Elton is over +1.50 for all HA composite scores and is +2.20 for type. "Marshall sires tremendous frames, outstanding feet and legs and well attached udders," comments Long. "He ranks third at Select for TPI at +1604 and will be used as a sire for sons for the PGA." An added bonus is his 8% calving ease.

"7HO5315 Sam sires what every dairy producer wants, high volumes of milk from great udders," says Long. "Sam sires similar type to his father, Elton, and many records through out Sam's maternal pedigree are over 33,000M up to 43,130M. Sam is outstanding for udder cleft (+3.08) and teat placement (+3.38) which puts him in the top 10 at Select for both traits."

Excellence breeds excellence and such is the case with 7HO5325 Heath. An Excellent (91) individual in his own right, Heath is from three generations of Excellent dams. In fact, five of the nearest six parents classified in his pedigree average 92.8 points. So it's no wonder that Heath is among Select's best for type at +2.24. This outstanding type, coupled with Heath's +.05%F and +74F, will make him a popular choice with many dairy producers.

7HO5338 Decipher comes from a maternal line that knows how to milk. The bottom side of this pedigree is full of high records from 30,000M to 38,000M. In fact, Decipher's dam is the highest producing two-year-old ever at the Paulo-Brothers Dairy, where Decipher was bred. At nearly a ton of milk, Decipher improves protein test (+.06%) and is +77P. He sires tall, strong, deep cows with extreme rump width, correct feet and legs as well as firmly attached udders.

Calving out first calf heifers will be a day at the beach when 7HO5379 Beach is the service sire. Beach is 5% for calving ease which makes him the perfect choice for heifer A.I. programs. Plus, he is also a superior settler that is over a ton of milk, +.03%P and +70P.

"With more emphasis on fat and protein in the marketplace, 7HO5408 Curtis is the right choice for breeders looking to improve components," explains Long. "Curtis ranks second in Select's lineup for fat at +96F and +.10%F while ranking third for protein at +80P and +.08%P. He is nearly a ton of milk and sires correct udders and great feet and legs. Curtis is a superior settler, too."

7HO6244 E Lance has been introduced into the Select lineup as a "show type specialist". He is the first Encore son available from Select and is from an Excellent (90-2E) Melvin dam who is 12 years old and still milking in a large commercial herd. "An Excellent (94) individual, E Lance sires daughters that are molded in the Encore fashion for size, strength and body depth," states Long. "E Lance is a great cross for the Blackstar and Chief Mark bloodlines and will put you in the winner's circle."

For the Red & White enthusiasts, Select has two exciting new sires, 7HO5309 Blue-Cut*RC and 7HO5412 Sovereign-Red. Blue-Cut*RC is an outcross sire, being an Abel son from an Elton dam. He is +1,709M, +2.06Tcombination in red genetics. Blue-Cut*RC is from three generations of Excellent dams and is a great cross for the Momentum bloodlines.

Sovereign-Red comes from a proven cow family, the Scarlets, who are noted for high scoring, high producing cows. A maternal brother to the popular Shandy bull, Sovereign-Red is a big league type improver being over +1.50 on all HA composites and +2.23 for type. Already utilized as a sire father, Sovereign-Red sires tall, dairy, capacious cows that are destined to parade winner's circles at shows across the country.

Select Sires has A.I.'s most credible lineup of diversified sires that can engineer the complete cow. These sires help the federation of 10 farmer-owned and controlled cooperatives achieve its basic objective: to provide genetically superior, highly fertile semen at reasonable prices.
