More Power From America's Best
After the dust settled from the August 2000 USDA
sire summary, it was clear that nothing had changed.
The best sires for milk, components, type, and TPI
still rank at the top, regardless of the base change.
And Select Sires still offers the industry's best
genetics and services at competitive prices.
The federation is even more powerful with the consolidation
of the Select Sires and Sire Power lineups. "This merger
brings unmatched genetic superiority and selection to our
customers," says Blaine Crosser, Vice President, Dairy Sire
Product Line and Customer Service. "We are now, without a
doubt, the largest A.I. organization in the U.S., serving
the genetic needs of our customers through our 10 member co-ops."
Still Pouring It On
Select Sires remains the leader for improving milk production.
Select offers 19 sires with more than +1600M, a feat no other
stud can match. Leading the pack is 7HO5255 Caleb at +2327M.
He is joined by four other bulls that are more than a ton of milk:
7HO4351 Barlo, 7HO5376 Outlaw, 7HO5375 Marshall and 7HO4637 Winchester.
7HO4252 Jessy and 9HO1817 Sultan both increased their milk proofs
by more than 200 pounds this summary. With additional second
crop daughters, 7HO4525 Rubytom's milk proof went up, too.
At 99% Rel, 7HO4324 Bendix is sporting his highest milk proof
ever, +1705M.
In the solids arena, Select exhibits more genetic power with
the addition of 9HO2293 Hale, a breed leader for pounds
protein (+75). Other elite protein sires include Outlaw, (+72),
Caleb (+68), and 9HO2266 Farmer (+67).
9HO2315 Jasper is Select's best for pounds fat at +91.
His stall mate, Hale is also one of the breed's best for
this trait at +77F. Rounding out the co-op's top five fat
bulls are 7HO5192 Wahoo (+74), 7HO5491 Mozer (+74) and 7
HO6250 Emerson (+73).
Select The Best Type
7HO6352 Eland is the breed's very best type sire at +3.59.
He is just one of 20 bulls Select has in its lineup that
are more than +2.00 for type, even with the -0.54T for
the genetic base change.
For targeting udder improvement, the federation offers
dairy producers a baker's dozen that are more than +2.00
for udder composite. Plus there are 14 sires in Select's
proven ranks that are more than +2.00 for feet and legs.
Six of these Select sires are +2.00 for both udder and
feet and leg composite scores. This cream of the crop
includes Eland, 7HO8419 Approval, 7HO5211 Blackbart,
7HO5386 Chil, 7HO5157 Durham and 7HO6247 Elation.
Select's best, and certainly one of the breed's highest,
for TPI is Marshall. His TPI went up more than 100 points
to +1707TPI this summary. It's no wonder with his
impressive numbers of +2.3PL, +2129M, +55F, +54P and +2.50T.
Joining Marshall at the top of the TPI list are Emerson (+1680),
Elation (+1653), Jasper (+1634) and Eland (+1611).
High Protein Breeds
Select Sires continues to be the powerhouse in Jersey genetics
with six of the breed's top 10 type sires. No other stud offers
more! In fact, there are eight bulls in Select's Jersey lineup
that are more than +2.0 for type: 7JE356 Sambo (+2.7), 7JE442
Paramount (+2.5), 7JE329 Centurion (+2.5), 7JE254 Berretta (+2.4),
7JE395 Choice P (+2.4), 9JE153 Flyer (+2.3), 7JE404 Bert (+2.1)
and 9JE159 Gurton (+2.1). Not to be outdone, 7JE386 Declo is
among the breed's best for protein at +53, while 7JE424 Freedom
ranks at the top for fat at +61 and milk at +1488. No matter
what the selection criteria, Select has a highly reliable lineup
that can meet any Jersey breeder's needs.
Guernsey breeders benefit greatly from the consolidation of
the Select Sires and Sire Power lineups. One look at the breed's
top 10 PTI list tells the story. Five of the top 10 bulls on
this prestigious list are now available from Select. They are
9GU141 Amen (+250), 7GU342 Raptor (+220), 9GU131 Lord (+215),
9GU136 Faro (+201) and 7GU339 Luxury (+200). Guernsey breeders
can now buy semen from the breed's best type bull, 9GU134 Valiant
(+2.4), from their Select Sires representative, too.
New to the proven ranks is 7GU343 Glacier, a components specialist
at +.11%F and +.09%P. High fat and protein traits were expected
from this mating of Prince Jay to 7GU302 Goliath's maternal sister.
The Glacier daughters are above average in stature, have correct
feet and legs, and outstanding rear udders.
Newcomer 7BS741 Jetvin represents Select's efforts to locate the
best Brown Swiss genetics in the world, regardless of the address.
The hottest new bull in Europe, Jetvin is sired by the American
type specialist, Jetway, and his dam, Fuschi, is well known
throughout Europe as a tremendous transmitter. "I recently saw
20 milking Jetvin daughters and came away very impressed," says
Sire Analyst Jeff Ziegler. "Consistently his daughters were the
tallest young cows in the herd with tremendous flat, dairy bone
structure. Their feet and legs were extremely correct and the
udders looked like milk. Jetvin's use on Blend, Starbuck, Emory
and Prelude daughters, as well as any cow needing additional
dairyness, would be complimentary matings." Jetvin sons will
be sampled through the PGA in the very near future.
Select Sires has America's strongest Ayrshire lineup. The breed's
top three Ayrshire bulls for PTI are now available from the
cooperative. 7AY62 Wandringeye stands atop this list at +332.
Ranking second is 9AY69 L Heligo (+272) while 7AY60 Recruiter
takes the third spot at +227. For the type enthusiast, 9AY55 Jason
is of great interest, being best in the breed at +1.1T.
Regardless of the breed, Select Sires has the industry's most
powerful lineup of diversified sires that can meet any dairy
producer's genetic criteria. No other A.I. source offers a
wider selection of A.I.'s greatest bulls from one source.
