Select Sires To Market Largest Holstein Lineup In History
PLAIN CITY, Ohio, Nov. 13, 2000 - Today Select Sires released
the largest lineup of proven Holstein sires in the cooperative's
35-year history. This follows the fall quarterly publishing of
dairy sire evaluations by the U.S. Department of Agriculture,
InterBull and the breed associations. The federation's 10 member
cooperatives now market semen from 100 Holstein sires, most of
which were proven through either Select's Program for Genetic
Advancement (PGA) or Sire Power's Genetic Opportunities for
Leading Dairymen (GOLD) young sire program. The November 2000
lineup includes six graduates from these programs.
"With 100 sires in our lineup, Select Sires is in the strongest
possible position to offer the industry a wide array of genetics
that will meet the varied needs of discriminating producers," says
Blaine Crosser, vice president, dairy sire product line, Select Sires.
"Historically dairy producers have looked to Select for sires that
consistently transmit both improved production and attractive type.
The combined strength of this current lineup and programs like the
Select Mating Service (SMS) will continue this rich tradition."
Enhancing Longevity Through Functional Type
As producers continue to look for ways to increase longevity in
their herds, they usually do so with goals for functional type - e.g.,
quality udders, feet and legs - in mind. The November evaluations
document that the Select lineup has the industry's genetic edge for
type, with seven of the Holstein breed's top 10 sires for Predicted
Transmitting Ability for Type (PTAT). Outdistancing all Holstein
sires is 7HO6352 Four-of-a-Kind ELAND-ET*TL, with a PTAT of +3.57.
The other six sires with PTATs higher than +2.50 are 7HO5157 Regancrest
Elton DURHAM-ET*TL, 7HO8419 Mr Jed APPROVAL-ET*TL, 7HO5375 Mara-thon BW
MARSHALL-ET*TL, 7HO6250 Ricecrest EMERSON-ET*BL, 7HO5767 Brabant Luke
BONANZA-ET*TL and 7HO5592 Wil-Hart E LOUIE-ET*TL.
7HO5592 Louie, a November graduate into the lineup and a son of
7HO3948 MJR Blackstar EMORY-ET*TL, is also one of 16 Select sires
that are higher than +2.00 for udder composite (UC) with a composite
of +2.11. Thirteen sires stand out as breed leaders by having feet &
leg composites (FLC) higher than +2.00, including 7HO5767 Bonanza
who is the highest with +3.43 FLC. When combining these important
type composites, one finds that Select has six sires that are more
than +2.00 for both UC and FLC - an accomplishment of only a few
sires in the industry. They include 7HO6352 Eland, 7HO5157 Durham,
7HO8419 Approval, 7HO5211 Ran-Rue Highlite BLACKBART, 7HO5386 Piercefield
CHIL Chamois-ET*TL and 7HO6247 Nunesdale Kismet ELATION-ET*TL.
Transmitting Tons of Milk
Two additional November graduates will create immediate market demand
because they literally transmit tons of milk. Both sons of 7HO3948 Emory,
7HO5630 Nors C Emory CALVIN-ET*TL and 7HO5615 Art-Acres EMORY KEN-ET*TL
have Predicted Transmitting Abilities for Milk (PTAM) that are higher
than +2,000. Also pouring on the profit with PTAMs higher than +2,000
are 7HO5253 Diamond-S Luke CALEB-ET*TL, 7HO5376 Mar-River Abel OUTLAW,
7HO4351 End-Road Leadman BARLO-ET*TL and 7HO5375 Marshall.
Eighteen more bulls in the Select lineup have PTAMs that are between
+1,600 and +2,000M. The featured sires at this level include many that
successfully have added second-crop progeny to their proof data. For
example, with 954 additional second-crop daughters, 7HO4324 Ridge-Heights
BENDIX-ET*TL earned his highest milk proof ever at +1,746 PTAM and 99 percent
Reliability. 7HO4525 Lenzway Tesk RUBYTOM-ET*TL added another 1,502 second-crop
daughters, which caused his PTAM to climb again.
Ranking High in Total Performance Index
Holstein breeders looking for a complete package of high production
and type often turn to Total Performance Indexes (TPI)TM as an indicator
of balance. 7HO5375 Marshall again surfaces near the top of the TPI ranking
with +1681. 7HO6250 Emerson*BL and 7HO6352 Eland are also in Holstein's
Top 10 for TPI with indexes of +1675 and +1637, respectively. An in-depth
review of the Holstein Association's TPI Bull List finds Select Sires
outperforming all A.I. organizations by having 13 of the Top 50 on this
elite listing. 7HO5592 Louie earned an impressive +1542 TPI on his initial release.
World-renowned 7HO4637 Ladys-Manor WINCHESTER-ET*TL and highly regarded
7HO4638 Ricecrest Tesk TERRY*TL each added 661 second-crop daughters to
their summaries, keeping them among the breed's best for TPI.
"These two sires have positioned themselves to successfully compete
with contemporaries that also gained second-crop daughters in the
November sire evaluations," says Charlie Will, sire analyst, Select
Sires. "Both now rank among the top 15 TPI sires with second-crop influence."
