Holstein Breed's Highest TPI Sire Graduates at Select Sires
PLAIN CITY, Ohio, May 12, 2003 — The Holsteins breed's newest No. 1 sire for Type-Production Index (TPI™) and five additional bulls debuting in the top half of the Top-100 TPI list have graduated into the active-A.I. lineup at Select Sires. This follows the May 12 announcement of new official evaluations by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Interbull and Holstein Association USA. Led by 7HO6417 O-Bee MANfred Justice-ET*TV, whose TPI of +1872 is 99 points higher than the next-highest bull in the breed, these graduates all excel in transmitting high components and profitable type as they join North America's leading active-A.I. lineup of 90 Holsteins.
"This is one of the most exciting graduation days in the history of Select Sires," says George Miller, retired vice president of marketing and development, Select Sires. "These six graduates, backed by 10 different sires and maternal grandsires, offer excellent diversity and milk components along with solid type. They present truly exciting, new genetic opportunities for producers throughout the world."
O MAN Leads Six Graduates in Top 50 for TPI
In what is believed to be a first for any A.I. organization, in May Select Sires graduated six top-50 TPI sires that were proven through its progeny-testing programs into active-A.I. service.
"These six graduates all result from either the Program for Genetic Advancement™ (PGA™) or Genetic Opportunity for Leading Dairymen (GOLD) program," says Chuck Sattler, vice president, dairy progeny testing and genetic research, Select Sires. "They are a great example of the value that a comprehensive progeny-testing program can bring to the dairy industry. The predicted transmitting abilities (PTAs) for these six show extraordinary balance for production and type (averaging +1,476M +69F +62P +1.73T) at an unusually high reliability for new graduates (averaging 83 percent for yield, 80 percent for type). Results like this are one reason why each year more than 4,500 herds that collectively milk more than 1 million cows help sample 350 bulls of six dairy breeds through Select's PGA."
Starting his active-A.I. career as the breed's best for TPI, O MAN also leads the industry for PTA cheese-merit dollars (+$802). Bred by Gary, Gaylon and Steve Obert, Dakota, Ill., this Excellent Ha-Ho Cubby MANFRED-ET son is out of an Excellent (92) 7HO2236 Emprise Bell ELTON daughter with 4-2 365d 35,082M 4.4% 1,539F 3.3% 1,167P. O MAN is a calving-ease specialist (5 percent difficult births in heifers) backed by PTAs of +1,767M +.14%F +98F +.09%P +76P +759NM$, 90 percent reliability, +3.1 productive life, 50 percent reliability. O MAN daughters are tall and strong, walk correctly on feet with a steep angle, and deliver high-components milk through udders that are well above the hock.
