The World's source for Bovine Genetics
New High-Components Lineup
Includes Genetic Leaders in Each Breed

PLAIN CITY, Ohio, Aug. 27, 2003 — The new Select Sires lineup includes six of the top 10 Jersey sires for Jersey Performance Index™ (JPI™), the three highest Guernseys for Predicted Transmitting Ability for Type (PTAT), the two top individuals for PTA Net Merit Dollars (NM$) in the Ayrshire breed, and the No. 1 Brown Swiss for PTA Milk. This follows the quarterly publishing of the dairy sire evaluations by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, InterBull and breed associations. The Select Sires federation of 10 member cooperatives now markets semen from 36 active-A.I. sires in the Jersey, Guernsey, Ayrshire and Brown Swiss breeds.

"This active-A.I. lineup is the result of Select Sires' commitment to providing superior genetics in all high-components breeds," says Jeff Ziegler, dairy sire analyst, Select Sires. This commitment is demonstrated through the quantity and quality of the bulls with highly reliable proofs in our lineup today. It also is shown in Select's ongoing young-sire development program - the Program for Genetic Advancement™ (PGA™), which samples the industry's largest total of 50 bulls from high-components breeds annually."

Two-Thirds of Top Jerseys are at Select Sires

Today producers will find six of the Jersey breed's highest nine sires for NM$, Cheese-Merit Dollars (CM$) and JPI in Select's lineup, as well as five of the top 10 for PTAT.

7JE535 Windy Willow Montana JACE is No. 1 for both NM$ (+519) and CM$ (+538). This Rock Maple Brook MONTANA-ET son also is in the top 10 for fat and protein with PTAs of +1,326M +.06%F +72F +.02%P +50P +2.3T. 7JE442 Rock Ella PARAMOUNT-ET ranks fourth for both NM$ (+471) and CM$ (+491). Also among the breed's top nine merit sires are two May 2003 graduates, 9JE202 O.F. Barber ROCKET (+441NM$ +462 CM$) and 9JE195 SJ Barmore Haleys COMET-ET (+425 NM$ +458 CM$). Six Select sires are in the breed's top nine for JPI. JACE now ranks second with his all-time high PTI of +299. Tied for No. 9 with JPIs of +248 are COMET and 7JE696 BW LEGION, the first proven 7JE329 Sooner CENTURION-ET son.

Select sires, which long have been recognized as the industry's best source for type improvers, also dominate the PTAT rankings with 10 earning PTAs for type of +2.0 or more. All 10 also rank among the industry's top 20 for type, including six of the highest nine. Again this quarter, 7JE510 GOLDEN Boy of Ferreira is the only sire with a PTAT of +3.0. LEGION is No. 2 in the breed with a PTAT of +2.9, followed by 7JE356 Lester SAMBO (+2.6 PTAT-M) as No. 7. Tied for ninth at +2.4 PTAT are PARAMOUNT (IB-M) and 7JE472 BW PARADE-ET.

LEWIS a Guernsey Standout

Producers looking for a proven Guernsey to sire the ultimate balance of high production, solid components and sound type should consider 7GU366 Trotacre Enhancer LEWIS-ET, the breed's No. 1 sire for Production-Type Index (+290 PTI), NM$ (+472), CM$ (+450), Fluid-Merit Dollars (+513 FM$), fat (+72 PTAF), protein (+52 PTAP) and type (+2.4 PTAT). LEWIS leads an elite group of Select sires that includes three of the breed's best four for PTI and the breed's top three PTAT sires.

The second-high PTI (+253) sire and the most in-demand Guernsey at Select Sires is 7GU360 Trotacre Loral TILLER-ET. A 7GU322 Trotacre Mercury LORAL-ET son out of two generations of Excellent dams, TILLER now has a type value of +2.0 PTAT, which is third in the breed. No. 2 in the breed for type, right behind LEWIS, is 9GU148 Trotacre Enhancer TYLER-ET. A maternal brother to TILLER, this February 2003 graduate also has a top-10 PTI of +193.

Two Ayrshires Dominate Breed

Yet again, 7AY62 Ardrossan Marathon WANDRINGEYE and 9AY69 Palmyra Lover's HELIGO's-ET are the top two proven sires in the Ayrshire breed. WANDRINGEYE is No. 1 for these traits: +300 PTI-M +470 CM$ +462 NM$ +447 FM$, and No. 2 for milk and protein (PTAs +1,259M +42P). This breed-outlier continues to transmit dairy frames and strongly attached udders that can generate top production with positive milk components (PTAs +.01%F +.02%P).

L HELIGO is tied as No. 1 for FM$ with WANDERINGEYE (+447), while ranking second for PTI (+262), NM$ (+428) and CM$ (+418). He sires scale, shallow udders and high rear-udder attachments.

The breed's fourth-high total-performance sire with +240 PTI, 9AY75 Palmyra TRI-STAR also ranks among the breed's best five with PTAs of +335 NM$ +346 CM$ +313 FM$. His yield PTAs of +994M +.02%F +42F +.03%P +36P balance with a PTAT of +0.9, which is indicative of the type of frames, angularity and udders that make TRI-STAR daughters stand out in the parlor and on the tanbark.

Best Brown Swiss for PTA Milk

Now the breed's No. 1 production sire with +2,019 PTAM, 7BS736 Forest Lawn PHT JAMARR ET continues to transmit the high milk for which his sire, 7BS693 Top Acres Dotson PROPHET ET, was known.
