TPI Sires At Select Sires
PLAIN CITY, Ohio, Nov. 21, 2003 — In November, Holstein Association
USA introduced its Top 100 list for Type-Production Index (TPI™) and
30 of the bulls on the list are found at Select Sires. At the top of
the list, Select’s sires hold five of the top 10 spots - including
No. 1 and No. 2. The release of the TPI list follows the quarterly
publishing of official dairy-sire evaluations by the U.S. Department of
Agriculture, Interbull and the breed association. Among the 90 sires in
Select’s active lineup are 22 with Predicted Transmitting Abilities
(PTAs) over +2.00 Type (T), 15 over +2.00 for Udder Composite (UDC)
and 15 over +2.00 for Feet and Legs Composite (FLC). Twelve sires
offer more than +2,000M, 26 rate 7 percent or less for calving ease,
and 49 sires are 90 percent reliable (Rel.) or higher.

No. 1 and No. 2 TPI Sires of the Breed
For the third consecutive summary, 7H06417 O-Bee MANfred Justice-ET*TV
(O MAN) is the breed’s No. 1 TPI sire and is also the top sire for Net
Merit Dollars. This Ha-Ho MANFRED-ET son from an Excellent (92-GMD-DOM)
7HO2236 Emprise Bell ELTON dam offers tremendous components, balanced
nicely with functional type. He has a TPI of +1915 and PTAs of +1,618M
.18% +103F .11% +75P at 92% Rel. and +.99T and +1.91FLC. He’s only 5
percent difficult births in heifers (DBH) for calving ease and offers an
appealing Somatic Cell Score of only +2.89. In addition, he is a Select
Sires SUPERIOR SETTLER™.
No. 2 on the TPI list is 7H05375 Mara-Thon BW MARSHALL-ET*TV, who continues
to move up the list as he adds his second-crop daughters. Now 99% Rel. for
production and 97% for type, BW MARSHALL offers a unique package of
second-crop reliability, over +2,500M and +2.80T. He ranks among the
top 10 of the breed for PTAM, PTAT and FLC and he’s also calving ease
(6% DBH). It’s not surprising he is also ranking high for customer
satisfaction - and in a variety of management environments.
Other TPI list highlights among the 30 Select Sires bulls on the list
include 7H08430 Zee-Cal PERSIA-RED-ET*TV, who ranks seventh on the Top
100 list and is the No. 1 red bull of the breed, offering over a ton
of milk and +2.45 PTAT. Startmore RUDOLPH son 7H06025 De-Matt Rudolph
TEAMSTER-ET*TV, who was released over a year ago, climbed to the eighth
TPI spot with +1703 TPI and PTAs of +2,024M +58F +66P +1.68T.
TEAMSTER is a calving-ease sire (7% DBH) and a SUPERIOR SETTLER.
Also ranking among the top-10 TPI sires is veteran Zielland ZEBO son
7H05710 Pagen-Ernwood DANE-ET*TV, who sires a balance of milk, components
and type with PTAs of +1,836M +.08% +86F +.01% +58P and +1.21T.
Twenty-five additional Select Sires bulls appear on the Top 100 list
ranging from +1689 to +1525 TPI. A total of 16 rank among the top-50
TPI sires and half of those have reliabilities of 90% or higher. Three
new graduates of Select’s progeny test program (Program for Genetic
Advancement™) debut among the top 100 TPI sires on the list, including
7H06500 Emerald-Acr-VR CADENCE-ET*CV (AMEL x ELTON), 7H06498 Sher-Est
Winch STEADY-ET*CV (WINCHESTER x THOR) and 7H06474 Regancrest
DEARBORN-ET*TV (BROCK x BELLWOOD).
22 Over Two Points PTA Type
Twenty-two type specialists at Select Sires have PTAs exceeding +2.00T.
Consistent with a commitment for balanced breeding, these 22 sires
average +1,278 PTAM, with several more than +2,000 PTAM.
Among the type elite are two bulls over +3.00T that rank first and
second in the breed for type, 7H05841 Sikkema-Star-W HI METRO-ET*CV
with +3.29T, and 7H05157 Regancrest Elton DURHAM-ET*CV with +3.04T.
HI METRO, a son of 7H03257 HIGHLIGHT Mr Mark Cinder-ET, also continues
to rank first in the breed for UDC (+3.48). DURHAM, sired by ELTON and
out of the 7HO0980 Walkway Chief MARK daughter Snow-N Denises Dellia
(EX-95-GMD-DOM), manages to hold his extreme type proof with an amazing
4,513 daughters classified. DURHAM ranks fourth for TPI among bulls at
or above 97% Rel. and is the only sire on that high-reliability list
over +3.00 PTAT. He’s also calving ease (7% DBH), a SUPERIOR SETTLER
and a Herdlife Builder™. HI METRO, DURHAM and BW MARSHALL (+2.80T)
are all at least +2.00 for UDC, FLC, body composite and dairy composite.
Also ranking high for PTAT at +2.52T is 7H06352 Four-Of-A-Kind
ELAND-ET*TV, a son of 7H03948 MJR Blackstar EMORY-ET*TV. Four
additional EMORY sons at Select have PTAs over +2.00 for type. Among
them are 7H05708 Fustead Emory BLITZ-ET*TV (PTAs +2,333M +2.28T),
7H05687 Sandy-Valley FORBIDDEN-ET*TV (PTAs +1,386M +2.26T), 7H05592
Wil-Hart E LOUIE-ET*TV (PTAs +1,238M +2.20T), and 7H05581 Eastview
Emory EQUITY-ET*TV (PTAs +1,863M +2.13T). EMORY grandson 7H06349
Hidden-View BEST*TV is also over +2.00PTAT and ranks No. 12 on the
Top 100 TPI list with PTAs of +1,303M +.09% +69F +.07% +55P
+1.94UDC +2.05FLC.
