February Lineup Includes Genetic Leaders in All High-Component Breeds
PLAIN CITY, Ohio, Feb. 24, 2004 — The February 2004 Select Sires
high-component breeds lineup includes five of the top-10 Jersey
sires for Predicted Transmitting Ability for Type (PTAT), the
top-three Guernseys for Performance Type Index (PTI), four of
the top-20 Brown Swiss sires for PTI, and three of the best 10
Net Merit Dollars (NM$) sires in the Ayrshire breed. These
findings follow the quarterly publishing of the dairy-sire
evaluations by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, InterBull
and breed associations. The Select Sires federation of 10 member
cooperatives now markets semen from 36 active-A.I. sires in the
Jersey, Guernsey, Brown Swiss, and Ayrshire breeds.
Top Jerseys in Several Traits
Select Sires continues to offer many of the best bulls in the Jersey
breed - six of the top-20 for Jersey Performance Index™ (JPI™),
seven of the top-20 for NM$ and 10 of 20 for type, which exceed all
other A.I. organizations.
7JE535 Windy Willow Montana JACE is the No. 2 bull in the breed for
JPI (+302, 92% Rel.), NM$ (+533) and Cheese Merit Dollars (CM$) (+554).
He also is the breed’s best bull for fat yield with PTAs of +1,343M
+.09% +77F +.02% +51P +2.2T, 85% Rel. Joining JACE in the top 10
is 9JE202 O.F. Barber ROCKET, a SUPERIOR SETTLER™, at +270JPI, 80% Rel.
Just missing this elite group with a +264JPI, 76% Rel., is 7JE563 Sil-Mist
RMBM Buttons BRAZO-ET, who debuted in November 2003 as one of the top
new PTAT sires. This +2.2T, 68% Rel., son of Rock Maple Brook MONTANA-ET
is one of the breed’s best for type and sires tall, dairy cows with
exceptional udders.
Again this summary, Select dominates the PTAT column with 50 percent of
the top 20 and also two of the only three sires that are +3.0T or higher.
Leading the pack, 7JE696 BW LEGION is +3.1T, 76% Rel., and moves ahead
of 7JE510 GOLDEN Boy of Ferreira, who is now No. 2 with +3.0T, 93% Rel.
Also included in the top-10 PTAT are 7JE356 Lester SAMBO, No. 5 at +2.7T,
99% Rel., 7JE442 Rock Ella PARAMOUNT-ET (97% Rel.) and 7JE559 Molly
Brook McKen FORMAL-ET (73% Rel.) who tie at +2.5T to rank No. 9.
A newcomer, 7JE570 AU Teacups TOPFLIGHT-ET, is one of the few sons of
Bancrest Lester AVERY and is +2.0T, 66% Rel. His pedigree is stacked
with five generations of Excellent dams with records in excess of 1,000
pounds of fat. With PTA values of +1,071M +46F +37P +434NM$ +444CM$
+228JPI, 79% Rel., this is a balanced genetic package with a linear profile
that writes longevity in the form of strength, width, dairyness, and
superior udders. TOPFLIGHT is an ideal sire to use on daughters of
BERRETTA, PARAMOUNT and FLYER.
Breed’s Top-Three Guernseys at Select Sires
Producers looking for the ultimate balance of high production and sound
type should choose from the breed’s top-three PTI Guernsey sires all
available from Select Sires. 7GU366 Trotacre Enhancer LEWIS-ET is again
the breed’s No.1 sire for PTI (+278, 78% Rel.), NM$ (+455), FM$ (487),
fat (+68) and type (+2.2, 78% Rel.). With a PTAM of +2,046, LEWIS is
one of only two Guernsey sires in active A.I. to be higher than a

No. 2 in the breed with a +264PTI, 71% Rel., is the November 2003
graduate 7GU379 My Day Bliss BANGER-ET. He also is second high for
protein (+53) and fat (+66F). He ranks in the top five for milk (+1,896)
NM$ (+409), CM$ (+402) and FM$ (+421). His +1.7 score for PTAT, 60% Rel.,
reflects the strength of pedigree that led to acquiring this Trotacre
Mercury LORRY-ET son out of Laeschland Perfect Bliss-ET (EX-92).
Select Sires has long been the source for type with the breed’s No. 1
bull - LEWIS (+2.2T). Second for type is 7GU360 Trotacre Loral TILLER-ET
(+2.1T, 78% Rel.), who is third in the breed for PTI at +243, 79% Rel.,
and fifth is 9GU148 Trotacre Enhancer TYLER-ET (+1.9, 67% Rel.).
Two Brown Swiss to Impact Breed
The strength of the Select Sires Brown Swiss lineup has intensified
with the most recent inclusion of 7BS750 Hilltop Acres En DYNASTY ET
and 7BS752 Sun-Made Garbro PRESTIGE ET, two of four Select Sires’ bulls
included in the breed’s top-20 PTI listing. With names inferring genetic
greatness, both DYNASTY and PRESTIGE are bred to sire the fancy-productive kind.
DYNASTY has gone up in both milk and type since his November 2003 release
and is now fourth in the breed for PTI (+289, 76% Rel.). He also ranks
among the best 10 Brown Swiss sires in all major performance traits with
PTAs of +2,103M +67F +59P +547NM$ +540CM$ +561FM$ +1.4T, 79% Rel.
Already established as one of the industry’s premier udder specialists
with a +11.71 Udder Composite, this R Hart Simon ENSIGN ET son will
significantly improve all udder traits. A sire of sons and embryos world
wide, DYNASTY has the potential to make his own mark in Brown Swiss history.
Released in February 2004, PRESTIGE is sixth in the breed for PTAT
at +1.3, 70% Rel., in the top 20 with a PTI of +204, 68% Rel., and
a +11.71 Udder Composite. He is a Mort Patrick TOM ET (M) son out of
Sun-Made Gar Bro Parfait ET (EX-90-2E), who completes an All-American
pedigree of five generations of Excellent-scored dams. Daughters of
this Program for Genetic Advancement™ (PGA™) graduate are large-framed,
capacious cows with quality udders that allow them to be productive
(+1,383M) and competitive in the show ring.
Three Ayrshires Among Top 10
Of active-A.I. Ayrshire bulls, Select Sires offers three of the best
10 for both PTI and NM$. 9AY75 Palmyra TRI-STAR is Select’s highest
ranking at +217PTI, 77% Rel., and +298NM$. He also is among the breed’s
top 10 for protein (+34), CM$ (+310) and PTAT (+0.9, 72% Rel.). His
daughters exhibit the type of frames, angularity and udders that stand
out in the parlor and on the tanbark.
