Whitlock Named Select Reproductive Solutions Specialist of the Year
PLAIN CITY, Ohio, Dec. 5, 2007 — Dave Whitlock, Floyd, Va., is Select Sires’ 2007 Select Reproductive Solutions™ (SRS™) Specialist of the Year. Whitlock received this honor, presented for the first time this year, at the Select Sires semi-annual Sales Conference, held in September in Columbus, Ohio.
This national award is presented to an SRS specialist that exemplifies the qualities that best accomplish the mission of SRS – to do whatever it takes to increase reproductive performance of dairy cattle and produce more pregnant cows. Highly trained SRS specialists are the foundation of accomplishing that mission.
“Dave Whitlock receives this award because of his dedication to his customers, caring attitude, work ethic and diligence to learn all he possibly can about cattle reproduction,” said Dr. Ray Nebel, senior reproductive specialist – field services for Select Sires. Wayne Dudley, general manager for Select Sire Power Inc., added: “Dave is respected and considered a professional by farmers and members of the agribusiness, A.I. industry, veterinary and university communities. He has embraced the SRS program in its entirety and is quite proficient in Select RePRO Analysis™, which greatly benefits our customers.”
Whitlock earned a bachelor’s degree in dairy science from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in 1989. He was a member of Virginia Tech’s Dairy Judging Team and received the Paul M. Reeves Outstanding Senior in Dairy Science Award. He served as herd manager at CUMVA Farms in 1989 and 1990 and then began working for Select Sire Power as A.I. training coordinator. He was a recipient of the Select Sires National Excellence in A.I. Training Award in 1992, 1995 and 1996. He served as Select Sire Power’s coordinator of the Program for Fertility Advancement™ (PFA™) from 2002 though 2006 and participated in several research projects.
Select RePRO Analysis, a software program that helps dairy producers use records effectively to find ways to improve reproduction, continues to be a main portion of Whitlock’s responsibilities. In fact, he ran 34 RePRO Analysis reports and made 23 farm visits last year. He also continues to teach A.I. training schools, instructing 111 people in formal schools and 63 people in on-the-farm training in 2006. In addition, Whitlock is a professional technician and participated in a large dairy breeding project in Florida last year where he and his team inseminated 1,400 cows in four days. He served as a judge for the Intercollegiate Dairy Challenge the past three years and has presented numerous seminars with allied companies and extension within the dairy industry. Whitlock also manages his own beef operation.
